You Tube is a great site. Just been looking at Arkle and found these beauties for those of us that have seen better days. There are so many great horses to choose from it is better just to appreciate all of them.

Seen them all but only in the RSA. The best Sea Cottage by a mile.Always ridden by
Sivewright a good but not great jockey and left with huge amounts of ground to
make up.Next Gatecrasher unbeaten on a lefthanded track. Had bad legs and lost the July on an objection and place last. The best filly Recounce but to be fair I never saw Kings Pact Many other good horse but nothing like the Cottage

Sea Cottage was not just the greatest SA horse, he was also the most popular. He was a hero to thousands of punters and even the general public, in days when course grandstands were full every Saturday and the newspapers published racing prominently and with photos.

I still remember the shock everyone, not just the racing fraternity, felt when he got shot. It was headline news, it was discussed in the street.

I also remember horses like Caradoc, King Willow and Jollify. They were good, make no mistake. If SC was the equivalent of Variety Club in those days, horses like Caradoc were in the position of Jackson, Cape Town Noir or Val de Ra. "If the favourite fluffs his lines, X will be right there to take over. He'd better not fluff his lines". To beat them so easily took a champion.

Sadly there was no TV in those days, and schoolgirls didn't go to the racetrack. So I never saw Sea Cottage. We listened to the radio commentary.

Sadly also, he was not a success at stud. I wonder what it is that makes the difference?
