Ah, telephones! ... who remembers using those red tickey boxes when a local call really did cost a tickey?

And those days when smaller towns had no direct dialing, so if you wanted to make a call you turned the handle like mad to ring the exchange, and asked for someone by name (they knew everyone). And you knew darn well that they'd listen in to any call that sounded interesting, even though they weren't supposed to! Almost like Facebook, "be careful what you say". Things change, but still remain the same.

And if you lived on a farm, you shared a line with several neighbours ... was called a "party line" ... and each of you had your own ring code. Short-short-long, or long-short-long, whatever.

I grew up in Matatiele, pop. 1000, and remember all of these well. What olden-days things do you remember about the place where you grew up?
