1st race
This is a very competitive race and it could be anyone’s race. Rulerofmyheart has been entered to run for the second consecutive week and the way he won last week shows that that he could well make it again with the same Sunil Bussunt on board. Baron Blixen won his first outing and isn’t out of the frame. Amaphupho was very unlucky last time out when dislodging his rider Preetam Daby. He is still in good shape and could give a good account of himself. Baynesfield, Point of Policy, Fort Noble, Powder Snow and Glory Boy have all their chances but all will depend on how the race will be run.
2nd race
Adeste Fidelis should be given another chance, as he didn’t have a clear run on his last outing. He is given to make amends by his connections with Robbie Burke on board. But he will need to have a close eye on Valmorne who will start from a decent draw this time. He has never been unplaced in his six outings in Mauritius and could well open his account. Man of His Word will have a lot of supporters as he has drawn stall 1. If he is given a soft lead, he will be hard to catch. Hail Atlantis will find it harder this time as he has been badly drawn.
3rd race
This race is the 1st leg of the Pick 6 and looks very competitive. Despite carrying 61.5kg and a hard draw, Urbi and Orbi has a good chance of winning with Richard Mullen on board. The latter is looking for his first win on Mauritian soil. He will have to watch out for Ricky Maingard’s Dreams Come True as he has won his last 2 races and is in perfect condition. Over The Ocean has progressed well in his 4 outings and with a healthy draw, he is the dark horse of the race. Spacebeam and Mountain Thunder are two beaten favourites. The former has a lot to prove whereas the latter might have find it difficult to find the trip.
4th race
The 2nd leg of the Pick 6 and it is too close to call. Serge Henry’s Prince Alwahtan won on his first start of the season, but a disappointing run last time out restricted him to a non-placing. Even so, he should go better this time. Salavador Dali has been in and around the top 4 in his last runs and should be therabouts. Royal Day won on his last run and can repeat it again whilst Siegfried is also a contender to claim the spoils. But the horse they all have to beat is Don’t Say Don’t who has been working very well in training.
5th race
A shock win on his debut means Gida cannot be ruled out, especially as he has the top draw and the blinkers on. Other contenders include Lividus and Traianius; the latter having won his last run. Monsieur Dane also has a good chance as he has drawn well and has worked to the satisfaction of his trainer. It would be wrong to rule this Gelding out. Finally, Bottom Dollar is a decent chance for the minor placings as he runs well fresh, along with Ashanti Gold.
6th race
The main race of the day will be run over 1400 metres and once again, racegoers will find it hard to find the winner. The favourite is Accelero with 3 wins from his last 5 runs. He is tipped to do the honours again, although there are other runners who could have a major say. Bobby Bear had a solid ending to last season and has started in the same form this season. However, a tough draw could compromise his chances and it is the same for Capitaine. Bolting Cat has been very inconsistent recently. In fact, he tends to start badly. If he breaks well, he won’t be far away. Governor General is having his debut on Mauritian soil. He is in good shape and his connections believe that he could give a very good account of himself. Glitter Star, I’ll Be Back and Royal Chalon could also run in the money, depending on the circumstances of the race.
7th race
Thursday Luch (No. 4) has been withdrawn on veterinary grounds, leaving us with only seven runner in this 1500m race. Out of all the runners, only Saziwayo has won a race in the last 5 runs. He has an outsiders chance as his jockey Rakesh Bhaugeerothee has been in fine form so far this season. Soul Mate will be running his second race on Mauritian soil and will be expected to build on from his 3rd place last time out. The Last Samurai has finished 2nd in his last 5 runs, and is a possible contender for victory whilst Shutterfly shouldn’t be written off with Johnny Geroudis on board. He has benefited from his first run and has been tuned to make the frame.
8th race
The final race of the day should see Cassido and Burberry going head to head. Both have won their last races, but Cassido has the advantage with a better draw. Sands of Fire should not be ruled out as he has come runners up many times. Admirals Cup finished last season strongly and should be a contender in his first start of the season whilst City of Choice, Ballito Boy and Manta Ridge are interesting outsiders.
