In case these waffles actually help anyone in anyway, tricky card and no great confidence in selections...

R1 Maestrale by a decent sand sire and for an inform stable will probably take a lot of beating if taking to the surface. Muzi deserts A P Amber, a well-supported runner-up on sand debut in a modest affair, for another sand debutant, Becketts Park. Probably a message in itself. BP is coming off a 15 week rest but so was APA (21 weeks) last week so Visser may well have BP ready to run also. Some with course experience have also had rests, Baby Tjoklits from the Shams and the Rugg/Brown runner Roman Legion are probably the best of them. Preference is for BT with 3 top 3 finishes in 6 c and d attempts. Rockabilly is a 42-run maiden but has to be considered having been runner-up 10 times in his 23 c and d runs. The trainer form though is a huge concern and recent runs have not been as inspiring as some earlier efforts (best in last 5 at c and d is 4th). Difficult to make a case for anything else. Selection... Maestrale x Becketts Park x Baby Tjoklits

R2 Nothing says to me that Mnguni will be suited to the sand and is too short in the betting for me. Not convinced that Khuluma won't need this second run after the rest but could well be too good for these even if not 100% ready. Trainer and jock in decent form. Lazaros showed big improvement without the blinkers, this is third run after a rest, again has a decent draw and Brown jumps on board. The form does not look particularly special but at the current prices looks a possible e/w bet. Peslier finished 3 lengths back of Lazaros in that run and now jumps from a better draw. Bubbly Bellini showed a little improvement last time out but is a long-time maiden and has a much worse draw. The rest of the field is a mix of sand debutants any of whom could surprise, and some with previous experience who do not inspire great confidence. Selection... Khuluma x Lazaros x Peslier

R3 A poor looking maiden. Success has not drawn well, not for the first time though and she is 4/6 for top 3 finishes on the course including a silver in her only try at the c and d. But, that is her only top 3 finish in 8 distance attempts and she has also only got within 5 lengths of the winner once on this course. That said, she does look the most likely of those with course runs and this will be 3rd run after a rest. Katanga represents Rugg/Brown but has just one silver from 8 course runs and a wide draw. Muzi is riding sand debutant Pole Vault, but this is another who is very short in the market for a horse trying the surface for the first time. Muzi is 60% for places for this trainer. Daddy's Luck takes a big rise in distance and may improve with her second run on sand and second after a rest but will need to do so. The rest either look held or simply not good enough. Selection... Success x Pole Vault x Katanga

R4 Handsome Hudson and Muscle Man's form seems to have disappeared along with that of their trainer, probably sensible to avoid them until matters improve. Trade Hall seems consistent if lacking a little "panache", he gets another good draw and has Muzi up and could prove a fair e/w or place bet. Brown is up on Fancy Some French but the fact he has not ridden him in his last 11 starts does not inspire confidence, he looks held by TH and has a poor draw. Having finished a few lengths ahead of TH 3 runs back, Fast Forward's form has seemingly vanished and now looks held by TH on the run behind POTF. Sakkie Sakkie finished top 3 in 3/4 of her sand runs and is 5/9 top 3 over the distance but is coming out of the maidens. Selection... Trade Hall x Fancy Some French x Sakkie Sakkie

R5 Competitive race with potentially significant form revolving around Boogy Boy, one of three Rugg runners and the choice of Brown. On a three-timer but runs from a worse draw and might use up early energy assuming he attempts to set the pace again. Metro Man has been in consistent good form and gets the 2 box but was beaten 1l by BB recently and is now 4kgs worse off. Kahal's Secret was beaten 1.25l by MM two runs back, now gets the 1 box and a 4,5kg pull. His last run was a disappointment but his form prior to that was also consistently good. Another Sham runner, Captain de Lago, has 2.25l to find with BB but has a decent draw turnaround, he was 1.25 lengths behind MM on that day but also also gets a 4.5 kg pull. Returns to 1400 which might suit him better but GW rides KS which is perhaps a sign. Atlantic Beach also has consistent form. Her last run can perhaps be ignored coming back from an 11 week rest. She has 2 golds and 2 silvers from 4 c and d efforts. Up against the boys here though. Mr Vindaloo and Zuchetto look well held and Fort Knox will have to find plenty of improvement. That leaves the other two Rugg runners... Giant Strides ran a decent 4th on his only course start and gets a much better draw; Beepbeep has returned to form of late and has a 1kg pull with Boogy Boy for a 1.75l defeat. Selection... Captain de Lago x Kahals Secret x Beepbeep

R6 Kruger Gold could be a big runner raiding from the Vaal but I have been bitten before by such visitors and at the price I'll pass. Storm Thunder has been poor recently but the stable is in form and this is third run after a rest, is 8/18 for top 3 finishes on course but none have been in the winner's box. Ice Kitten is inconsistent but if finding her best form could be in the mix. Miesque's Force from the inform Rugg stable has 2 silvers from 7 c and d runs and although well beaten in many recent starts has a chance in what looks like a mediocre field. The far from convinced vote goes to Beijing Olympics who though coming out of the maidens and dropping 400 in distance, won his maiden at the 10th attempt on his sand debut with a convincing win of over 5 lengths. Selection... Beijing Olympics x Miesque's Force x Ice Kitten

R7 Eye of the World has finished third twice in four distance attempts and has a big weight to hump round the course, Pearl Rush has yet to finish out of the top 3 in 8 visits to the course, winning 5 of the last 6 but has yet to go this distance. Has won last two, coming off a rest, over 1800 drawing away on both occasions and despite being 1.5kgs worse off with EOTW for a 1.75l victory I suspect she will confirm the form. African Gladiator is somewhat of an unknown quantity, won his last two starts convincingly but up against much better. Radiant Rock is a definite possibility if taking to the surface. The other 4 contenders all look well held. My hunch is for African G who may have more to come off a light weight. Selection... African Gladiator x Pearl Rush x Eye of the World

R8 Starfire is consistent but two 3rds from 8 distance runs does not inspire confidence. In his only run over c and d he was beaten 6l by Sudden Surprise and gets only a 2kg pull. Marius was 1.5l behind Starfire in that race on his Bingo debut. He appears to have the beating of Bownore on Vaal form and both seem to need to improve to win. With Passion has a 6/11 record for top 3 finishes at the course and is rarely far away, has a wide draw but likely to give a decent show again at a good price. Lieutenant Dan finished 6.25l behind SS in the race mentioned previously. He was drawn 12/14 and now has a much better draw in 6. He gets a 4kg pull for that defeat but has yet to place in 7 distance runs. Red Hills has similar credentials but has won over c and d. Beaten 6.75l in the SS run, gets a 5kg pull, was also drawn wide and now gets the 1 box. Only win was when well supported in the market so may be worth watching. Divide n Rule has finished her last two starts over 1000 strongly so is perhaps worth another chance at 1200 but has no better than 4 3rds in 10 attempts at the distance and is well held on the SS race, much too short in the market imo. Sudden Surprise won from the widest draw in the race referred to and now gets the 2 box, on the draw and weights he looks to have a good chance of confirming the form. Selection... Sudden Surprise x With Passion x Red Hills

R9 The drop in trip is interesting for Little Swan, no wins in 14 distance attempts but does have two 2nds and three 3rds. Has had three runs on the course, winning over 1400 and 1600 and runner-up over 1800. Has a wide draw this time. Bezrin's Babe won her sand debut well and despite coming out the maidens must have a chance from the 3 draw with Muzi up. She's Got Gears is 4/6 for top 3 on course but has only one 3rd in 10 distance runs, though has yet to run over the c and d. Kiwi Island is consistent with 8/13 top 3s on course, she is drawn wide but has run well from wide draws before and has a gold and a silver from 4 c and d runs. Double Click finished 2.5l ahead of Kiwi Island two runs back but the latter now has a 7kg pull and in his last run DC was beaten 4.5l by Little Swan over 1400 and is 1 kg worse off. Selection... Little Swan x Kiwi Island x Double Click

@Englander:

following your advise.....extremely tricky (and weak) card!

The only nibble for me will be an e/w permed double as ff:

race 8 No.2 sudden surprise and no. 12 divide n rule

race 9 No. 10 she's got gears (must get a strike before retiring this 4yr to stud?)

break a leg and best to those with runners!

in race 2 the alexander yard send out 2 runners and with danielson making a rare visit to kimberly to ride for them in the feature race i take it he could be on the stable elect love nautilus and prefer to take 5 to 1 than the 14 to 10 mnguni ....both have never run on the vaal sand however...dont ignore muhtarac as he has made up a lot of ground in his 2 kimberly starts after not jumping with them and today gets an extra 400m...only look at maiden races in kim

Good observations Pirates, I am pretty sure Alexander sent down another sand first timer that won recently as well. If anyone can tweet Ruby Clipper there might be more info there?
Muhtarac I fear is a horse that could become very expensive to follow, he was still well beaten in those two runs and similarly beaten over 1900 on turf. I am more inclined to think it is all about the start, may improve without running into kick-back all the time. I am partly writing this to get egg on my face as I'll likely have a couple of hopeful rand on again ;)
