We are at renewal time for membership of the National Horse Trust but I must bring to your attention a very difficult situation that is facing the NHT. The raising of funds in the last two years has not been what your Trustees and Executive Committee would have hoped for as the funds raised have been well below budget. As a result we currently do not have a fund raiser working for the Trust although we are looking for one. The consequence of this is that we have had to temporarily halt the support that the National Horse Trust gives to the three Units around the country, namely the Eastern Cape Horse Care Unit, the Highveld Horse Care Unit and the Coastal Horse Care Unit. This action on our part has obviously had an effect on the Units, which is a sad situation.
We are attempting to solve this serious lack of funds in various ways, ie an approach to the Racing Industry and other stakeholders are in progress, as we believe that it is appropriate that the Racing Industry as a whole shows its caring and compassionate face to ensure that thoroughbreds are not abused after their racing days are over and that this also applies to all equines. In the nature of this process it is taking time to get a proper response from the industry and we are therefore faced with a serious short-term shortfall of the NHT funds. I am therefore appealing to you to try to assist us at this difficult time as we need at least R250 000 to R300 000 to solve the short-term funding shortfall.
Membership of the National Horse Trust is at the nominal fee of R500 per annum.
