VAAL SAND : PACE ANALYSIS
12 years 6 months ago
Does anyone do pace analysis in lieu of sectional timing for Vaal Sand?
Regularly there are results where the winner wins in an ‘average time’ yet the ‘also rans’, as a group, run 10-20 lengths behind there ‘normal’ performance levels.
Last week Lusikisiki, Waltzing Duel, Bee-Em Tee, Woodland Fire, National Danzig, Captured Time and Arabian Storm all ran +/- 15 lengths behind their last performance against Tomorrow’s Miss who won in an average time for that class. The early frontrunners, Think Again and Vivid, finished last and second last.
The assumption is that the pace of the race caused this disparity…far too fast for most of the contenders.
Similarly La Volta made all too win well, yet again in an average class time, whilst Kinematic Countess and Club Captain are certainly better than their performances here.
Any views, or more specifically any experience with pace analysis ?

Would agree with Greg the course seems to run different from week to week but unlike the turf were we get good, yeilding or soft we just get "standard". It does make it difficult to analyse.

Indeed, it would seem that on some days the going is more 'standard' than other days; I think 'they' need to look at ways of classifying the surface, e.g. 'very slow'. 'slow', 'standard', fast' very fast' - or 'light', 'medium', 'heavy' - the only way to explain the disparities as mentioned by THH, is that some horses are better (or worse) suited to specific track conditions prevailing on the day.

Cant tell you anything from a pace angle !
I agree with Shrek the track is not always running at standard . The last two meetings its been slow !
Its possible that even sand horses perform differently depending on the state of the track .

Hi HH. I am a big fan of your work on the sand and I miss your contribution. I gave up serious punting on the horses some years ago, mainly because of a lack of sectional timing. Have spent many thousands of hours trying to to figure out a way of constructing pace figures. Used to tape the races and used a stopwatch to try and get a pace rating for a race. Studied Tom Brohamer, Howard Sartin, Andy Beyer et al religiously. Did have limited success but that was before Vaal sand. My guess is that one would be able to make a killing if you went to the course and time the races at a fixed point ( maybe the 800m mark for longer distances and the 400m for sprints) The Vaal sand is the ideal course for pace analysis. It is the only course in the country where they consistently race at a true pace. I doubt that we will ever get sectional timing in this country but if it does happen in my lifetime I will be like a kid in a candy store.

AMAZING
1.6 mil litres of water and 10ml of rain and the track looks to be running slow !

I did write after the last meeting that there seemed to be a lot of 1 or 2 horse races because no one else was getting into the races..very bad for the punter..

Difficult if he is busy riding winners all day
