Nikolic stood down after stoush

Jockey Danny Nikolic, who is currently being probed for race fixing, has been stood down following a heated confrontation with Victorian chief racing steward Terry Bailey.

''WE'VE all got families. We know where yours live.''

So said jockey Danny Nikolic to chief steward Terry Bailey at the foot of the stewards' tower before race 6 at Seymour on Tuesday, according to Mr Bailey, who last night was giving evidence before a racing board.

Mr Bailey also alleged the sentences were littered with expletives - and that Nikolic had already showered him with a barrage of the unprintable expletive.

Mr Bailey contacted Victoria Police about the threat - and Racing Victoria arranged for a security detail to be on standby to protect Mr Bailey.

Nikolic was immediately stood down indefinitely from riding - which is why last night he was applying to have his suspension lifted, so he could ride at Cranbourne today.

It was at Cranbourne last year that Nikolic allegedly conspired with others to fix a race so that his mount, Smoking Aces, won. Family friends won more than $200,000 on Smoking Aces.

Last night Nikolic denied abusing Mr Bailey. Instead, he alleged that Mr Bailey said to him: ''I've told you I was going to f--- your career.''

The confrontation came after one earlier in the day in which Nikolic said to Mr Bailey: ''Keep your eyes on the road Terry.''

Last night Nikolic accused Mr Bailey of ongoing harassment and referred to comments allegedly made to him by Cara Rodd, wife of jockey Michael, that Mr Bailey wanted him (Nikolic) out of racing. Ms Rodd denied making any such comments when called by a journalist.

After the confrontation, Mr Bailey was on the phone to a member of the Purana taskforce, which is investigating corruption in racing. He told the hearing that ''Nikolic came up to me right in my face as if to work out who I was talking to''.

Racing Appeals And Disciplinary Board chairman Russell Lewis ordered Nikolic's suspension to continue. Nikolic lodged an appeal, which could be heard tomorrrow.
