Just seen that Baron ( My Lord) Oaksey has died after a long illness. Will always remember him for his amatuer rides on Bullocks Horn although his 2nd in the Grand National of 1963 as an amatuer is right up there with John Thorne on Spartan Missile. RIP

John Oaksey was a great amateur rider but John Thorne was the ultimate amateur , bred trained and rode his own horses and ran 2nd in the grand national having sweated off a stone(14 lbs!!!). It was one of the greatest feats ever in the national but unfortunately overshadowed by Aldaniti and Bob Champion. I am lucky enough to have been friends with both of them
