All parties have to share the blame unfortunately. Miners and police certainly did their bit to make this situation turn very very ugly. However one witness reported to the BBC that the police fired for two minutes. Two minutes ??? If you take one automatic weapon and fire it for one minute you get a lot of bullets, now multiply that by two and then by the figure of all the other armed police there and you simply come to the conclusion that this was a massacre. Very sad day for our country, very sad...

Why is everyone so pissed off with the police??
Im not condoning the killing of civilians but just what did you expect the police to do?
Allow a group of aggressive strikers to charge at them and not retaliate??
These miners were moving and taking their dispute into the informal settlement. How much carnage and innocent lives would have been lost had the police allowed them to do as they please??
We all cry and moan about crime and violence in this country but when police stand up and do something they get targeted and called savages! I understand we have a "history" of police murdering innocent people back in the day, and this type of force by the police brings back ugly memories, but this is NOT the same situation.
Once they started killing police officers, and themselves, they turned this situation ugly and the police are now treating them as hostile....and rightly so!

Gordo, the miners were armed with sticks compared to live rounds. Goverment must take the rap. We got to stand up as a nation, innocent lives were lost.

Surely,if you talk violence and declare war on the police you must expect them to fight back and not be surprised if you lose!
I am not sure they can be described as "innocent" lives!

Were the security guys who were killed, killed by sticks. No. The strikers had guns, pangas, knives, spears to name just a few weapons. What are the police supposed to do? Ask them what they are carrying. Watch the video and before the strikers start running at the police you can hear a few shots. Who fired those? If it was the police then those were the warning shots and they kept coming and accelerated. If it was the strikers then the police were justified in also using live ammo.

I have just watched the clip on reuters, looked like a scene from a war film.
I think police were justified in firing, but why so many bullets.Looks like they lost control
and were aiming high. That said someone must have whipped the miners into a baying mob
hellbent on violence and the ones at the front suffered. If the police had some of their own killed
they wouldnt take any chances, cant really blame them.

Often the strikers are sitting around drinking and smoking the green stuff during strikes and this does not create a climate for straight thinking and then things like this happen.
