Bookies ''Killing July''

SA Vodacom July, our most popular event on the racing calender is fast losing its high profile thanks to the bookies.I record for many years when the event was the Rothmans July the whole racing fraternity, and just about everybody would have a bet on the most spoken event on the calender.Prices were brilliant which had everybody from the street cleaners, office workers and everybody scrambling to a tote outlet or bookmaker to have a bet.We somehow have missed the plot and this event is like a normal meeting.I can't recall when a July mediocre field had a July favorite priced up at 2-1.A punter would be better off by punting an ordinary race with a 6 horse field and most probably get 3-1 than have a bet on a July field with no value, come on bookies catch a wake up as this is our so called event of the year.

Zoro

Cannot agree with you more.
I know I will get flak from fellow ABC clanners about this, but the July day is the one day where there is more value on the tote.
Even favourites pay R1.60 a place on the the tote.
"All to come" on the tote is the way to go ON THIS DAY.

Agra I actually also agree with you on this one.

I will be backing Jackson for a win on the Tote. My only tote win bet for the year. Reason being my bet will not make any change to a R6 million win pool and you once a year punter and housewife don't want to back the favorite for their 10 bucks they want a longshot or the "Grey Horse" so a large portion of the pool will be made up of small bets trying to beat the favorite. In the July the tote regularly pays better on the favorite than on the books because of this.

imo jackson should be odds on because he is facing a very weak field where 95% of field has no chance of winning.i hope all the experts continue believing there no hopers can win then hopefully i can get better price on the winner.lol.

Nothing surprising about "more value on the tote" on any day with big crowds of people backing lucky numbers and favourite colours.
As long as I have raced these type of days have been great value ,including the exotics.

Just by the draw I am expecting Jackson to drift out to maybe 4/1 on the day.

Greg I think between 15/10 and 2/1 is the right price for Jackson, I am just saying with the additional money wagered by once a year punters the tote may represent better value than the bookies.

There can be little doubt that Jackson will start under 2/1 on the day...
