CAMPBELL GILLIES, who secured the biggest win of his racing career on Brindisi Breeze in the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival this year, has died while on holiday.

Jump jockey Gillies, who rode over 50 winners for Lucinda Russell, including Brindisi Breeze, had ridden as recently as Sunday at Hexham before going on holiday to Kavos, Greece, on Monday where the tragedy occurred.

Winner of 131 races under rules in Britain, Gillies enjoyed his best ever campaign in 2011-12 with 38 winners, and had ridden four winners so far this season.

Tributes have been flooding in on Twitter, with Alexander Voy among his weighing-room colleagues to express their sadness.

He said: "I can't believe it. You only have one best friend and now he's gone. I'll never forget you.
