Clairwood Gold Challenge

It's amazing, owners & trainers complain about prize money & the number of races in a season and yet there is a R700 000 race on Saturday & the best they can do is field 6 runners.............

What a joke!!!

Do they need an extra month in the KZN feature race season?

No, just an earlier cut-off date for weight penalties for the July ::o

if people knew anything about handicaping then this thread would never have been opened...do you thunk the majority of the horses running in the 1800m HANDICAP on the same day are doing it for the fun of racing for a much smaller stake?

its a wfa gr1..would rather see 6 quality horses than 18 and 12 also rans with no hope..they have small field gr1s in the uk and it doesnt seem to be a problem

The part I dont understand is that even if Variety Club wins the race with another a close second it doesnt necessarily mean that the other runner will be heavily penalised. The way I may read such a scenario woulld be that Variety Club did not run to his rating (even if he won) and another horse would be the fulcrum for handicapping. My sixpence worth.....

Pirate, your point is noted regarding the handicaping however by that rationale we are going to have the 13 runners from the Cup Trial dead heat for first in the July or at least that is what their owners and trainers think alternatively the runners in the Gold Challenge have no hope of winning the July or are so good that no matter what penalty they are possible July winners. All tooo confusing for me.

Justin V, i dont give two hoots what they do in the UK, China or France, i punt & watch SA racing.

My point is simple, it is disgraceful to have a 6 horse field in a Grade 1 event with a stake of R700 000. If i were the sponsor I would certainly be very happy.........
