Pear Tart fights hard to claim Queensland Guineas
Self-inflicted injuries cut into her preparation but failed to stop Pear Tart producing a gritty performance to claim Saturday’s Group II Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm.
The filly’s trainer John Thompson said Pear Tart’s problems began after the daughter of Dehere posted an easy win on heavy ground at Eagle Farm on May 2.
"She won very impressively but on the way home in the float, she played up badly and cut her head open terribly,” Thompson told Sky Racing World.
"She got about 14 stitches above the eye. Her hip has got no skin on it about the size of a football.
She had to be on penicillin for about 10 days.”
Thompson said Pear Tart’s work over the past week had pleased him and Patinack Farm’s new Queensland jockey Jeff Lloyd enough to convince them to run the filly in the Queensland Guineas.
Punters expected the heavy ground to present a stiff test for Pear Tart at her first run for a month but the $16 chance showed her durability with her fighting win.
Pear Tart raced behind the speed before Lloyd took his mount to the front at the top of the straight. Darley runner Free Wheeling threatened to sweep past Pear Tart at any stage but the filly fought hard to keep her male rival at bay over the final stages to score.
"She’s a very promising filly,” Thompson said. "The preparation she had into this race was not good. It’s a great effort for the horse.
"She does get through it (heavy ground) well but to have that preparation for a race like that and win, it’s very much a big effort.”
Thompson said he was unsure what path he and Patinack Farm boss Nathan Tinkler would take with Pear Tar during the remained of the Brisbane winter carnival.
Stradon belied his huge odds to finish third at $151 while the short-priced favourite Mental settled in the second half of the field but never threatened to repeat his impressive win at Doomben.

@ Ryan: Lloyd wins Queensland guineas.
How I wish that read : Lloyd wins Vodacom July Handicap, finally! Yes Jeff has won just about every major race in this country but The BIG one still continues to evade him. Come on Jeffrey, it's time to do what Michael " Muis the Ace" Roberts did on Super Quality, we don't want to remember u like Charlie Barends who won several Gold Cups but never cracked a July win.

You can see why he rides overseas, the 1st prize is as big as the July, and he must ride in dozens of races every year with better prizemoney...

@ Ryan ; Charlie Barends won a July on Extinguisher .
Yes u are right, Ryan. Hell was in 1938 so long before my time. Matter of interest Aubrey Roberts won on Diza in 1962 so that's 2 in the family, if i'm correct?
