Johannesburg - Motorists should not, under any circumstances, buy e-tags for the e-toll system, the Freedom Front Plus said on Tuesday.

"The fact is that the e-toll system is still not operational and that important legislation, which would make the paying of the e-tolls enforceable, is still outstanding," spokesperson Anton Alberts said.

Beeld reported that Transport Minister Ben Martins said consumers could go and buy their e-toll discs, as the department was busy concluding talks on the matter.

Speaking at the launch of National Transport Month in Soweto on Monday, Martins said more precise plans on the future of e-tolling would be made public at a media briefing on Friday.

Alberts said tariffs had not yet been published.

It was also important to note that the e-toll system's accounting system for non-holders of e-tags depended on the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Act, which was still not properly functioning.

"The majority of the notices and fines which are being issued in terms of Aarto, are not legal, such as the fines or notices which are being sent by ordinary post," he said.

"Therefore, payment notices for the use of the e-toll system by non-holders of e-tags will also be issued illegally and would be non-payable.

"For this reason... road users should not register for e-tags."

Martins declined to answer further questions on the issue, or to be drawn on when the government planned to start e-tolling.

On 20 September, the Constitutional Court set aside an interim interdict halting e-tolling on Gauteng's major roads, giving the SA National Roads Agency Limited the right to start the process.

Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance spokesperson Wayne Duvenage said on Monday that the review hearing of the e-tolling system would still take place in November.

He said motorists should wait for more clarity on the issue before purchasing e-tolling discs.

Here is a total loophole..... I'm sure a taxi licence is far cheaper than an e-tag and a months excursion on the N2 ring road.....besides moonlighting at the airport with a chaufer drive sign will also help pay off the beamer bus and keep it off the back roads.....:S

I would love for them to send me an account via the post - I thought the postal strike was over - but I have not had 'normal' postal delivery for months - even had to arrange with my trainer to send his bill vial e-mail.

And the world is getting stranger every day - who would have thought that Cosatu and the Freedom Front would ever agree on something :S

I have been told that SANRAL DO NOT have a system in place to charge motorists that don't have e-tags, it will be a failure if we all stand together. That is why there is a huge media campaign on the go right now to encourage motorists to buy the e-tag...

...so please DON'T BUY AN E-TAG

Pretoria - The High Court in Pretoria has granted the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) against a previous judgment made by the high court.

"The order I make after some consideration is the following: leave is granted to the applicants to appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal against my previous judgment handed down on 13 December last year," Judge Louis Vorster said.

He deferred the matter of costs to the SCA.

Vorster did not detail his reasons for the judgment, but said he would provide written reasons when requested.

The following excerpt is from OUTA website

What should I do if I oppose e-Tolls?
Speak to your local councilor, write letters to newspapers, SANRAL and Ministers, join blogs opposing e-Tolls, discuss your concerns amongst your friends and work colleagues, phone into radio shows and discuss your concerns, go to the SANRAL website and read all the details about what is involved. To have an opinion, you need information. This OUTA website is intended to try and help you understand the issues and you are welcome to become an OUTA supporter ..click through to the “Support Us” page on this www.OUTA.co.za web site.
Do not buy an e-Tag, unless you feel it necessary to do so to earn the discount offered.

If you can afford the full rate, let SANRAL do the work to get your bill to you. Theoretically they need to mail this by registered mail to ensure you have received the invoice. There are just too many flaws, irregularities and unanswered questions.

OUTA are still approx 3,8 million short of the total 11.8 million required to cover legal costs.

I have donated R250 (taken off by gambling budget...rather give to a worthy cause).

If another 100 clanners who can afford it, do the same that will make a quick contribution of R25000. I very much doubt the bookies will feel the pinch.
