racing coming to China?

Got this off an old page of www.horsetalk.co.nz/news/2010/03/196.shtml (2010). Apparently it should be complete sometime around 2015.

Excuse me if you already are aware of it! But no wonder our racing boytjies are keen to get some sense into the quarantine arrangements for AHS. They will be wanting to demonstrate the quality of SA-bred horses on a world stage. This could be a big market for our horses if we can get into it, but we need to first prove we are competative. (Bolding mine)

"The developers of a $US1.25 billion racecourse in Dubai have announced a joint venture to develop Tianjin Horse City in China.

Reports suggest the overall development will cost $US4 billion.

Its backers confirmed that the college and its associated facilities will cost $US1.46 billion alone.

Meydan City Corporation, the Dubai state-owned developer of the Dubai racing facility, says Tianjin Horse City which will be established in Ninghe County, Tianjin, in 2010.

It will train 8000 equestrian professionals, breed 1000 stud horses, produce horse feeds, conduct horse auctions, hold international and domestic professional horse races, promote and impart equine culture and knowledge to youths, provide tourism services and protect the wellbeing and interests of equines.

In addition to an equestrian college, feedstuff plant, breeding base, horse hospital, and quarantine centre, Tianjin Horse City will also include five-star to seven-star luxury hotels, a clubhouse, commercial offices, and residential facilities.

It is estimated that the project will pay hundreds of millions of taxes and profits to the State within five years, provide employment for 10,000 people, and develop a horse industry economy.

The planned facility has already filed its application to the Chinese Equestrian Association for the establishment of a national equestrian sports and horse racing training base
.

Tianjin Horse City is to be jointly established by Meydan City Corporation (Dubai), TAK Design Consultants (Malaysia), Zhouji Jiye (China) and Tianjin Farm Group (China)."

LOL! Yes let's hope not. Eventually a lot of them will be, but, like other countries (e.g. Japan), even a strong wealthy culture of breeding your own has got to always be varied with stock from other countries if one wants to stay competitive in big international races.

And if I know China, they will be hungry and thirsty for international glory ... just see their considerable representation at the various Olympic Games ... no money for winning, but to gain reputation and be seen as winners ... that's a big drive for anyone.

No, there will always be a market there, as in any racing jurisdiction, for good racing and breeding stock, in hopes of getting one step ahead of the competition.

I used to see horse racing from China on that Australian documentary series we used to get "Racing World". They raced to empty stands, seems there was not any betting and the jockey silks were just single primary and secondary colours. Very boring.
