Thanx for the info everyone, I think (i'm not sure) that when you go to the academy, you learn every little detail about the horse and not just about how to ride, that's prob why they get a trainers license so quick.. Sham, when you begin as a stable employee, must you then also ride the horses in the morning ?

since when is it easy to get a jockeys license?? join the academy at 15/16 +- with a class of 12 or so..of which only 5 or 6 graduate..up at 3.30 to groom horses then off to track to rides many horses string after string followed by school in the day..or the much harder route be a workrider before!

@hotline:
(and to Carl!)
'Let's get his name right...Chris Burger was paralyzed playing rugby.....Carl Burger sounds better.....And he has other business interests,am sure racing is a hobby for him'
Sincere apologies.... oversight and too much of that 'stuff' again! Somebody must have mixed horse manure with it?

'How To Become A Trainer'
(This is the recommended route for everyone barring ex-jockeys)
1.) Under achieve at school. Intermittent attendance, multiple disciplinary appearances and an early exit for any type of substance abuse is first prize.
2.) Take up golf at an early age. It will later prove indispensible.
3.) Take a couple of gap years. Preferably overseas. If, by some Act Of God, starvation drives you into manual labour in a racing stable then grab it. It will fool eveybody back home that you have some rare skill when you are eventually deported back to South Africa.
4.) Complete your education in South Africa. This will generally follow a sequence as detailed hereunder :
Bank clerk - insurance salesman - Herbal Life - used cars - fund raiser -stable assistant - assistant trainer - trainer.
All of the above are essential in honing your skills in marketing services and products with common denominators :
They are expensive. They promise much. They deliver little. They will also introduce you to a range of individuals who will hone your skills in the art of schemes, subterfuge and unethical acts. All of them will claim to have made 'big money' but none will show any signs of having retained it.
You are now ready to be a trainer.

I think he actually meant to ask 'why ex-jockeys get a training license so easily?'
