What does it take to become a trainer? I know you must first become an assistant trainer...

I'm pretty sure that you need to be an assistant first unless you were a jockey.

Start young and you may get paid.....many trainers don't like to pay you for their knowlege and experience they believe that they are teaching you....:S

In most first world countries u can buy a license as long as u have horses to train, But here in our third world country u have to go and work for a trainer up to 2 years before u can go write the test and get Ur trainers license,,, ( I speak under correction but that is how i understand it works)

Miss Becky:

'What does it take to become a trainer? I know you must first become an assistant trainer... '

Depends..:S

A black apprenticed jockey who apparently barely rode a winner (or even a horse!) passed his trainer's 'test' and was granted a licence because he had potentially over a hundred Indian owners to supprt him (that's what the game wanted then!)

Another black apparently never even sat on a horse or served any form of tutelage also passed his 'test' and was granted a licence because of 'transformation' and was sponsored!

Needless to mention, both are no more on the scene!

Now, a black groom with over 20 years within the industry (and having been a mentor at the groom's school), cannot get his licence; he failed his 'test'!

Hats off to Chris Burger (Carlos the Jackal) who was within the industry as an owner for ages (and regular contributor to this forum), with an avid interest in training (and a near fatal accident); he survives and succeeds!

Wonder what's the difference?

:)-D

You actually have to first be a stable employee for 2 years, then may write the exam for an Assistants license, then all being well another 2 years before you are able to write the Trainers exam.

However before the NHRA will grant a Trainers license you have to fulfill other criteria as well, such as being able to prove you are solvent, have equipment, horses to train and facilities I e stables at a registered center or private facilities that pass the NHRA standards.

Not a cheap venture

A question that very close to the truth is "How do you get a trainer to become a millionaire? Answer. He must start off as a multimillionaire.

May I ask why jockeys get a license so easily ? It does not necessarily mean if u can ride a horse u know how to feed it ,look after it ,
and train it etc. And of course u need a bit of business savvy to run the financial side...

Once you are a qualified jockey in SA you are certainly an accomplished horseman, easily comparable to someone with 24 months experience not riding. My 12 year old daughter can feed her horses, it's ludicrous to think that professional people around horses every day for years don't know how to feed or look after them.

On the financial side everyone needs a bit of business savvy, why would you care whether the next bloke can look after his money or not?

one of the arts that make a trainer is BULL SHITING the owners.
