How to Survive The Met

Get there early - you can wander around observing the excess on an obscene level rather than sitting in traffic.

Stick with the 'big boy' trainers. One or more usually dominate on Met Day. Try and identify both trainer and jockey trends early. ( A couple of years ago I caught Jeff Lloyd with an all to come four ball across all four Group 1 races ).

Wear clothing that is light and cool - it's usually very hot and sweaty. Headgear and sunscreen essential.

Ladies - black is s-o-o-o last decade. And heels are OUT in the unstable dusty or deep grass underfoot conditions. It's not out of respect for their Jimmy Choo shoes that you see ladies walking around barefoot. They've all done a tendon!

It's not a bad day for treating the form book with disrespect. Everybody's usually trying.

Beware backing horses that travelled to Cape Town just for the big races. They disappoint more often than they deliver.

Remember - the favourite has a shocking record in the J & B Reserve Stayers over 2800m.

Mark the winner of the Listed juvenile race. You have usually witnessed a future champion.

Enjoy. It's one day where it's really not about the money.

Gr8 Advice and that last race is my favourite. Was on course the year that cars caught on fire remember LouisG with no eyebrows after he tried saving some rental. I had my baby(last R100) on Kale in THE LAST and had the whole course glaring at me screaming GO Johnny G GO Johnny G GO was the biggest rougie in the race and paid R38+ a win.

A few meetings later I had my last R10 EW on a horse(forgot name) owned by the Hillary's Gold -Brown Spots or Brown with Gold Spots trained by James Lightheart who went home sick earlier in the day...paid R110+ win R10+ a drum.

Year before last year I had win/win place/win win/place doubles River Jetez - Sangria Girl and almost stuck out a bookie. Won R25K for R180.

A year later, I had no tom, some farm boys from Wellington came into the tote at Parklands after the Met was run they missed the Met and they wanted to back something to show the mense back at the plaas that they had a bet, I stuck them into Sangria Girl. They had R1500 wins and R2500 places on her between them and left before the race. I was shocked that she again paid so much. The next day they came back to collect.... I asked for a chop.... and they gifted me a gorilla :)

Yeah, but it's bugging me that I cannot remember the horses name....I remember something in the pedigree from the tail line
Three Spots...Persian Bold X Nanette

Muhti.....do you frequent the tote in Parklands? I use to live there and use to go quite often. Have moved house about a year ago, so don't go there anymore

No I'm a Joberg boy....when I was flush I would go down for the Met and sales but not go to the course....instead I go to Parklands or BW Milnerton.....going to the course on Met day is punters suicide..... too many distractions, not enough betting facilities and a seat is not cheap. Last Met I went to and actually went on course was when Alistor won. This year I'm in CT on the 10th Feb for a week.

On this Magic / Muhti........this was one my most memorable moments at a Met.............it was the last race and i had already taken my bet and here stumbles along 3 or 4 guys and they come and stand next to me........they were hammered and could barely walk.......nevermind talk...........the one guy says to the other......just go put R10 on that horse for me..............he points at the on course tote monitor.........the win is saying R99.......his friends try and talk him out of it, and he says no, put it on that one........he obviously couldn't run to place the bet, so his friend went and came back. The horse won and those guys went beserk......they had won over a grand........the horse was ROYAL ROCK!
