Hear The Drums has retired
13 years 5 months ago
Hear The Drums – the winning most race horse in South African History – has retired from racing and has returned to his birth place, Summerhill Stud. He earned over a Million rand in stakes, having 65 Starts, 35 of them wins and 19 places; he deserves a happy and effortless retirement.
“When we start weaning later this month, Hear The Drums will accompany the likes of Senor Santa, Amphitheatre and Redcarpetstyle – fellow legends of the turf looking after or as it’s known on the farm “baby sitting” the up and coming champions”, writes Tarryn Liebenberg, the Pre-Training Manager.
Many thanks to Peter & Gail Fabricius and trainer, Des McLachlan. It is a great honour for a Summerhill bred & raised, to return to the farm and live out the rest of his days in green pastures.

I concur on a job well done by all concerned, not least Hear The Drums himself. I know at times that there were complaints of races being put on just for his benefit, but he had to be that much better than the rest to keep winning those races and to my last breath I will never understand what is so wrong about giving a good horse a chance to shine and giving punters a "free" Pick 6 or Jackpot leg every now and then.
Well done to Choppies, and well done to all involved for pulling the plug when they felt the time was right.
