South Africa: Five times champion Piere Strydom will be outof action for six weeks after breaking his jaw in a freak accident in the parade ring at Turffontein on Sunday.
His friend Claudia said on Monday: "It happened when he was mounting the unraced two-year-old Denzarox. The colt hit him in the face with its head and broke his jaw completely through.
"The doctors have had to wire the jaw closed in order to minimise movement. He can't really talk or eat. Everything has to be liquid."
Strydom, 45, is regarded as one of the country's top big race specialists. He won the Durban July on London News in 1996 and again on Trademark five years later.
He won the J & B Met on Angus in 2003 and gained his biggest win outside South Africa on J J The Jet Plane in last year's Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint.
