Clinton is a mate of mine, so I thought I would go and see if he's talking from his pocket.
The bloke does have a point I think. IF the race is part marketing, then to go past letting the best horses in (say choosing by merit and/or wins) and to try predict the distance aptitude could be a marketing disaster.
Summerhill may as well advertise buyers to stay away from speed horses and stay away from classic horses, because you then lose your ticket in the 2 million rand lottery.
From a marketing perspective, you would think it's just easier, and smarter, to make the entry for R2 million pay-day more luck than a panel selection. If you know that anything can happen, you might have a go a buying anything. If you know that only a certain profile will get you in the race, you may as well aim your buy towards a specific type and maybe not bid on other types.
Maybe Clinton should have tried further but he is stiff having the highest rated horse in the waiting room and not first in line even then. Having said that, there are some horses who look about 80 over about 2000m, but seem to be low 70's over 1200. Good luck to the selectors choosing between the speed and the stamina.

You've got to feel very sorry for the breeders, Greenhill Farm, who had fairly high hopes for Blazing Sunset, a very good maiden winner, by over five lengths, though somewhat disappointing in his first start out of the maidens. To say that he is a sprinter, however, is nonsense. Ironically, his dam is by Northern Guest, a stalwart of Summerhill, and she descends from such terrific middle distance horses as Majorca and Haiti.

They just had the draw - I thought it was a real 'f*ck up - starting with no 12 - and then promptly gives the first number drawn (which happened to be 1) to the 13 ?????

So nobody else thought the draw procedure was a bit suspect?

I backed SHEZTHECLUBQUEEN when it won the feature at Turffontein. I was just wondering how it got a run in this race when Terry Lowe is the Breeder, Owner and Trainer. Did he have it up for sale and then purchase it ?

Why would he have his broodmare at another Stud Farm when he got his own.

Maybe he just knows a little more about breeding than the average joe....he sends a mare/s to board at a stud where they suit the stallion.... not an uncommon practice.....besides his new sire has only arrived for this coming season. Bigger mistakes have been made by sending your entire broodmare band to a single stallion and finding out down the line that they were mostly unsuitable....:S

Provided a horse goes through the ring at the Ready To Run sale and the buyer ticks the box to pay the little extra, it qualifies to run in the race. It does not matter where or by whom it was bred.
