EARL OF SURREY GOES INTO RETIREMENT

JACK MILNER: TRAINER Geoff Woodruff has confirmed that Earl Of Surrey has been retired after pulling up lame in a run last week.

The Zimbabwean-bred gelding made his first appearance on the Vaal sand last Thursday but, after looking dangerous halfway up the straight, he compounded to finish more than 20 lengths behind winner Bouquet-Garni.
“He pulled up very sore and I had discussed with the owner that if he ever ran a race like that we would retire him immediately,” said Woodruff.
“He’s been a fantastic servant of racing and has won 15 races and run five places in his 28 starts. He has won a Grade 1 race, the Golden Horse Casino Sprint at Scottsville, and a number of other graded events. He is now eight years old and he has earned his retirement.”
Last season Earl Of Surrey finished second to Dancewiththedevil in the Grade 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m at Turffontein and won the Grade 2 Hawaii Stakes over 1400m and three Pinnacle Stakes races. In his last win he narrowly beat Pierre Jourdan, who went on to finish second to Igugu in the Vodacom Durban July.
In the 2009-10 season he landed the Golden Horse Casino Sprint and the Grade 2 Drill Hall Stakes at Greyville and placed in the Grade 2 Senor Santa Handicap and the Hawaii Stakes.
Earlier in his career Earl Of Surrey was trained by Lisa Harris in Zimbabwe, where he won a number of other graded events.
He was bred by Sarahdane Stud in Zimbabwe and is by Australian-bred sire Century Stand out of Bush Chic.

i think if this horse had been 100 sound could have been one of the better horses we had in SA over the last three years.

Well done to Woody for keeping in training so long.

Good that the connections made the correct choice and let him retire before he broke down on track

Won the Zimbabwe Derby as a 3yo and the Golden Horse Casino Sprint as a 5yo. Thats some doing. Reminds me of Key of Destiny winning the KZN Derby as a 3yo and the Golden Horse Casino Sprint as a 5yo. Key of Destiny was no slouch over 1200m though.
