Seabiscuit

For those who never watch the movie Seabiscuit its on DSTV Channel 105 at 19.30pm. And you guessed right its about a racehorse that captured the American people hearts during the great depression. Great movie for racegoers. Enjoy.

It's very good. Unfortunately the footage at the end of the real Seabiscuit v War Admiral match race was missing, which is available on the DVD version, but it is a great movie. An unlikely tale if ever there was one, and proof again that truth is often stranger than fiction. I always chuckle at War Admiral's owner calling Santa Anita "some little goat track out West." Times have certainly changed. Santa Anita is one of the world's greatest racecourses today, while Pimlico barely survrives by the skin of its teeth and almost certainly still exists only because of the Preakness.

yeh, gives you hope for Kimberley doesn't it ... don''t laugh, you never know ... PE has already produced three horses that placed in the World Cup, not to mention Bold Silvano who would have gone off favourite if he'd started ... which is more than Turffontein or Kenilworth can say.
Watched most of the film and enjoyed it big time, even though I had to give up watching Invictus which kicked off just 15 minutes earlier. Maddening that they schedule the only two worth-watching movies at almost the same time, but c'est la vie, c'est la guerre.

Relax, Mavourneen. One thing you can count on with DSTV is that the same movies will be shown another 78 times this week.

I wonder how much poetic licence they took with the movie, especially in that Santa Anita Handicap at the end. Did he really come from that far behind the rest of the field and win that easily?? If he did, it was a performance for the ages.

I rented the dvd Secretariat the other day, it's also an enjoyable movie for any race fan. I can see why the yanks loved this horse so much. It won the Bellmont stakes by 31 lengths!

Magic - you've not seen Secretariat ? OMG - go out and get it NOW ! In fact, grab a copy of the book as well while you're at it. The movie has meant a big revival in interest in the horse and you can now get a bunch of stuff that was out of print until recently including 'Secretariat' by Raymond Woolfe which has awesome photos.
For anyone who's not read Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit, it is without a doubt one of the greatest racing books ever written. The movie version took a few liberties and some are listed here - www.imdb.com/title/tt0329575/goofs
However, Magic, you are correct. According to IMDB "During Seabiscuit's Santa Anita Handicap win, he is running dead last early in the race. The charts for the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap show Seabiscuit running no worse than fourth at any point during the race. In fact, he was in perfect striking position around the first turn and down the backstretch"
Youtube footage here:-

He set track records, was Horse of the Year, overcame injury to make a major comeback and all in all his career really was the stuff of legend, but of course nothing is good enough for the movies so they had to 'Hollywood' it. Gah.

Zsuz, I agree with you 100%. The book Seabiscuit is more factual, and I enjoyed it much more than the movie. In my case I read the book first before I watched the movie. It turned out to be an anti-climax!
