Seve was not just a sportsman or golfer, he was an inspirational artist who transcended his sport. His army of fans that followed him around every tournament consisted of not just golf fans, but anyone who appreciated true genius and artistry. Flair, passion, charm, determination, courage, emotion, heart and pride are just a few words that describe his flamboyant character. He was a born leader and single handedly put European golf on the map and become the inspiration for a number of world class European players to follow in his successful footsteps.
The sporting world today is filled with too many robotic players who are worried about their image who believe they are too high and mighty to engage the public. Swashbuckling Seve would never fit into this category. Seve would often go back to his seaside village where he learned to play the game and the whole community treated him as part of their family, Seve would engage with everyone, telling stories and listening to the old whilst playing with the youngsters. I believe that Seve never played for himself, he played for Spain, Europe and above all to entertain the public.
The words genius and talent are often bandied about but rarely are they so applicable. The tributes and memories of his peers that are pouring in are testament to that. There was something truly magical about Seve, that magic will live on in the memories.
RIP Seve - A true legend
