Solo leads home Snaith one-two in Cape Guineas
Racing Post
Kenilworth: Bloodstock SA Cape Guineas (Grade 1) 1m, turf, 3yo
SOLO TRAVELLER (Justin Snaith/Bernard Fayd'Herbe) completed a notable Guineas double for his trainer and jockey when beating stable companion Run For It in the Cape Guineas at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Snaith and Fayd'Herbe, both winning this Classic for the first time, had also won the Fillies Guineas with Ebony Flyer two weeks earlier.
Mike de Kock's Kavanagh looked like winning when he went clear over a furlong out but Solo Traveller (7-2) wore him down inside the last 50 yards and scored by a neck from the strong-finishing 20-1 chance Run For It.
Kavanagh was a head away third with his stable companion Perana a neck back in fourth.
Fayd'Herbe said: "I had to give my horse a crack after a furlong because he was idling but that got him into the race. I then had to get through a tight gap two furlongs out but that was no problem to him. He's tough."
Snaith added: "It's so sad that the Cape Derby and the J & B Met are both on the same day (January 29). I would like to see one of these two in the Met and maybe it will be Solo Traveller while Run For It goes for the Derby.
"But Mike de Kock says I must take him on in Johannesburg and, if I do, he will lay on both boxes and saddles!"
What A Winter started 17-10 favourite but he had only one behind him early in the straight and managed only sixth.
His rider Karl Neisius said: "I was stuck three wide and I couldn't get in but I don't think he stayed. He got there but then horses that he had passed came past me."
