Stoute holds all the aces in King George puzzle

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE has half of the six-runner field for Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot as he bids to win the midsummer highlight of the British Flat season for a fifth time.

The race lives up to its billing as a clash of the generations for the first time in years as seven-length Investec Derby winner Workforce is the first Epsom hero to run here since his stable's Kris Kin in 2003.

And it is Stoute who provides the best of the older generation in the shape of Harbinger, an impressive winner of the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last time and a best-priced 11-4 shot behind Workforce.

Harbinger is owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, whose spokesman Harry Herbert is under no illusions as to the task the four-year-old faces.

"We are into uncharted territory," he said. "It's a small and select field. I'm highly respectful of all the runners, Workforce as much as any of them by the manner he won the Derby. You just don't see that very often and when you do see it, it's never a fluke."

Ryan Moore has decided tostay loyal to Workforce with Olivier Peslier aboard Harbinger.

Stoute, who saddled a welcome winner in Nouriya at York on Friday night, has also declared Confront to act as pacemaker to Workforce, who was pushed out to a top-priced 11-10 by Coral and William Hill on the eve of the race.

Aidan O'Brien runs Cape Blanco, who beat a below-par Workforce in York's Dante Stakes before running below form himself in the Prix du Jockey Club.

However, Cape Blanco has come out again and won the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh. O'Brien said: "It looks a very good King George, but our horse is in good form and we're looking forward to the race."

Colm O'Donoghue takes the ride as Johnny Murtagh is suspended.

With Dar Re Mi a late non-runner due to a bruised foot, the field is completed by top French filly Daryakana and the evergreen Youmzain.

Youmzain is well overdue to clinch a big race. Always running well with no luck and finishing in the frame. For me I will have to play him each way as well as a reverse forecast with Workforce.
