Kipyegon breaks world 1500m record with 3:49.11

Coming into the Golden Gala meeting in Florence, Faith Kipyegon said the world 1500m record was in her heart and on her mind. By the end of tonight’s race, it was also in her legs and on the clock – which she stopped in an astonishing 3:49.11*.

The world and Olympic champion delivered a thrilling finale to the third leg of the Wanda Diamond League with a bravura performance in a city that last saw a world record when World Athletics President Sebastian Coe broke the 800m mark here in 1981.

The pacemakers had been asked to take the field through in 3:54 pace, which seemed ambitious on a damp track after early rain. But that pace merely left Kipyegon full of running when she took the lead in the penultimate lap, as she blazed through the final 600m at unprecedented speed.

Her feet barely seemed to touch the track as she flew home in incomparable style to take down the eight-year-old standard of 3:50.07, set by Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba in Monaco in 2015.

That was a phenomenal performance. Well done.

A month ago I watched the London Marathon.

The winner of the Mens race, Kelvin Kiptum, just 23 years old wom the race and almost broke the world record. It was just his second marathon after he won his first. He definitely can break the world record and even go under 2 hours.

The Womens race was won by Sifan Hassan, the reigning 5000m and 10 000m Olympic champion. The commentators thought she was done and dusted but was able to win. In the Olympics she fell in the heats but still managed to win the heat. She has a dont die attitude.

I see Faith Kipyegon broke the 5000m record yesterday. Two records in under two weeks. Extraordinary.

Well Kelvin Kiptum as expected did break the marathon record today. Just a matter of time before he goes under 2 hours.

From Reuters.

Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum shattered the men's marathon world record in Chicago on Sunday, winning in two hours and 35 seconds to beat compatriot Eliud Kipchoge's previous mark by more than 30 seconds.
