Yes is was cloudy, however, the wet outfield would have affected the hardness of the ball, and the seam would have softened eliminating any movement that could have been on offer. I do believe come tomorrow, with a dry outfield, we will see favourable bowling conditions, and wickets will fall.

I will also make a call and say Van Zyl will score runs this test.

is Van Zyl a genuine opener? Where will he bat when Smith returns to the team? Taylor and Compton really battled it out well for England today and hopefully one or two of the Protea batsman do the same.

Lol, if Smith returns to the team, I will then support the west indies :)

I was super impressed with Compton particularily. Have enjoyed watching Taylor in 50 over cricket, but hadn't properly watched Compton. I do think England need a guy like him to make that No3 position his own. Let the whole team bat around him, while he just plays his normal game.

Re Van Zyl, I don't think its his preferred position, but he has batted at 3 for so long, and so often he is in within the first couple overs, so its not to much of a big jump, compared to say going from 5 to opening. He loves the ball coming onto the bat, and struggles trying to get in when spin is operating, so rather open than bat 6 or 7.

Both Compton and Taylor have been treated poorly by England. Taylor should have stayed in the team after he made his debut v SA and Compton did nothing wrong (batting wise) when he was in the team a couple of years ago. Its a shame that the West Indies are so poor nowadays. Australia are giving them a real going over. Its a pity that the likes of Gayle, Bravo, Sammy, Simmons and Russel have chosen not to play tests. I used to marvel at the way they played when the likes of Richardson, Welsh, Ambrose, Bishop etc used to play for them.

Ambrose was one of my favourite bowlers ever. Sometimes I used to wonder if he knew how to talk..haha. Also used to enjoy watching Big Carl Hooper. Actually too many to mention.

Its really sad with the Windies though, one must wonder how much longer they will even be considered a fully fledged test playing nation.... Their future does indeed look particularily bleek though...

I saw Hooper hit one of the biggest 6s ever at the Gabba in a one dayer against the Aussies

Makes you think how good the old chaps are. Now days helmets are hardly ever taken off, even when spinners are operating. Back when there was no helmets at all, and they still played hook and pull shots to opening bowlers... Eish...

a miracle that nobody was killed especially at the WACA when it was the quickest in the world. Wasim and Waqar were another of my favourites to watch.

They were definately up there with the Windies opening pairings, of greatest all time. I was always fonder of Waqar for some unknown reason. One of the guys I wish I could have had the opportunity of watching was Dennis Lillee.. Watching higlights of his career, looked a beaut.

Of the current young guns going around, under the right guidance, I do think Hazlewood can be something special (bold call but got the atributes and same mould of Mcgrath). Cannot believe Pakistan are allowing their 3 cheats to play again. NZ have some very good youngsters coming through the ranks, and they do look exciting. Although not a youngster, if he stays away from injury, I seriously like Finn... Just my opinion, but I think he is englands best bowler (obviously Jimmy in england with the swing is top, his record speaks for itself), but out of England I do believe he is the best they have.

Pitch is dead, Eng should score in excess of 350 +. Typical of the last outpost to prepare such a pitch. CnC game looks like a draw writen all over it now. Morkel and Steyn bowling kak.
