Only Zaaki, coming out and beating a crack field in the Cox Plate — Australia’s best race — in three weeks’ time could rival Peter Moody’s now indomitable Caulfield and Melbourne Cup favourite.

While the hype and hope of a Flemington match-race between Incentivise and Verry Elleegant failed to come to fruition, the $1m Group 1 Turnbull Stakes still delivered in spades.

The only thing missing really was the rumbling of a 20,000-strong crowd at Headquarters.

Incentivise gave them a chance on Saturday but the five-year-old former Toowoomba galloper, who has gone from a Sunshine Coast maiden to dual Group 1 winner in eight starts, absorbed the heat.

He was eyeballed out of the barriers.
