Trainer John Thompson has paid tribute to his ‘old marvel’ Dreamforce after making the decision to retire the star veteran following last Saturday’s Tramway Stakes.

Thompson announced the decision on Monday to pull the pin on any further spring runs and send his classy nine-year-old into a well earned retirement on the Central Coast.

The stable had been contemplating the decision since the autumn but made the final call following his seventh place finish in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes, where he had been chasing a hat-trick of wins.

“We were thinking of retiring him last preparation when he came second in the George Ryder,” Thompson said.

“I said to the owners that I‘d love to try and win a third Tramway with him and we agreed to give him a couple of runs in the spring.

“He ran well first up when he needed the run but didn't have the same zest as he normally does so that’s when we made the call.”

It was hugely important for Thompson and his owners for Dreamforce to retire a happy and healthy horse after providing them with some unforgettable memories on the track.

The son of Fastnet Rock was a model of consistency through his 41-start career, winning 13 times and placing on a further 12 occasions while banking more than $2.5m in prizemoney.

His career high came with a well earned Group 1 breakthrough in the George Ryder Stake – a race he finished on the podium for in 2019 and 2021.

“He’s been an old marvel for us for a long time and geez you’d love to have a stable full of them like him,” Thompson said.

“They don’t come around too often.

“His nickname around the stable is Rocky because he has a head that only a mother could love but he’s as tough as they come.”

Dreamforce’s other notable victories came in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup and Group 3 Chatham Stakes while he also won a Listed Winter Stakes.
