Adrian Bott expects rivals will need to bring their A-game to get past bold front runner In The Congo in Saturday’s Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill.

Bott and co-trainer Gai Waterhouse have their three-year-old colt flying as he prepares for the first of his spring grand finals in the $1m feature.

In The Congo has been a model of consistency since making his debut in May this year, never finishing worse than second in five starts.

The highlight came in his gritty Group 3 San Domenico Stakes win two starts back but he lost no admirers last time when getting run down late by Golden Rose favourite Anamoe in the Group 2 Run To The Rose.

“He has proven himself now and stepped up every time he runs,” Bott said.

“He is going to have to do that again on Saturday but he has drawn well and pleased us since his last run.

“We know he has got excellent tactical speed and should be able to use it from the draw.

“It’s going to be hard to turn the tables (on Anamoe) but he is a horse that is hard to get past.”

In The Congo will jump from barrier six in a field of 13 three-year-olds and is a $10 chance with TAB fixed odds in a market stifled by hot pot Anamoe ($1.95).

Tim Clark will jump back aboard In The Congo for the Group 1 tilt after missing the ride in the Run To The Rose to pilot stablemate Converge, which has since been forced out for the spring with a virus.

It’s likely to be the last Sydney run of In The Congo for his spring campaign.

But Tulloch Lodge won’t follow many of his rivals on Saturday on a Caulfield Guineas path after Saturday with Bott pinpointing another Melbourne Group 1 as his next target.

“His race would be the Coolmore,” Bott said.

“I reckon he would be really effective down the straight and he looks to be a sprinter to seven furlong type so we will look that way after Saturday.”

A win on Saturday would also likely put In The Congo in the frame for one of the remaining The Everest slots but Bott expects connections would be better placed chasing a berth in the $15m race in 2022.

“Trying to run in a race like The Everest would be 12 months too soon for a horse like him, he is still only a young horse,” he said.
