Frodo, what are the rules relating to a first timer in a handicap maiden?
Can they run?
The concept could create some nice betting opportunities I think, but much more interesting on turf,I would expect!
(sorry guys ,was adding/editing while you were responding)....but thanks!

Sorry, rob; you got me there; perhaps hibs/scotia can fire off a mail to Vee (or has he been replaced yet?) I would guess that first timers are not eligible?

Hey Magic ,where would we find the rules............ cos it would appear that you need to have earned a MR to run(judging by the fields) BUT what about a 2 yr old like SPECTABOLOUS who, as you pointed out, could have been anything in a field like this....but 2yr olds have no OMR ? and hard therefore also, to tell if they get their WFA allowance or not.
Not urgent but useful for next time.

Ernst Oertel follows up on his 100/1 shot last week with a 33/1 this week - watch out for the treble, I suppose:

Hi Dave,
To qualify to run in ANY handicap race,a Horse must have at least 3 runs(if a maiden and depending on the surface) or be a winner.
Obviously based on the above statement,A First timer is ineligible to compete.
Juvenile ratings(2yo’s) ONLY become official when they turn 3yrs(ie:01.08.2010) – the reason being that RETROSPECTIVE ratings are practiced in order to obtain more ‘Reasonable”ratings for these juveniles when they venture into OPEN company as early 3yo’s.Juveniles are allowed to compete in open company from 01.04.2010 and they will be weighted of their ‘Unofficial”rating in a Handicap.
Mr Lips is 100% correct in that in all Handicaps any horse that qualifies for a WFA allowance will duly get that deducted from it’s GROSS rating, that is ALWAYS published. For example,In Race 3 horse number 11 Spectaboolous’s Unofficial MR is 70 and after taking into his WFA allowance of 10,50kg’s(ie:22MR points) he is a nett 49,thus the Weight of 52kg.A simple calculation to ascertain if a Horse is in the weights or under sufferance,is the following:
Always look at your Top-weight,Three Kings(MR 68) and after taking into account his WFA(3lbs) he is a Nett 65.
If MR 65 = 60 kgs and the bottom weight in a Handicap is 52kg’s ie:8 kgs(16 MR points)spread then Spectaboolous was weighted correctly on his nett rating.(65 – 16)=49
I have advised the Handicappers that in future to publish the Unofficial ratings when 2yo’s do run in handicaps,so that the punter will have an idea if the Horse is in the weights or not.
I hope that the above answers all your clients concerns and please feel free to contact me if you need any further clarificiations .
Thanks,
