De Kock odds-on for Grade 1 with Mother
Preview: South Africa, Sunday 3pm GMT
Turffontein: Laurie Jaffee Empress Club Stakes (Grade 1), 1m, turf, 3yo+, f&m
MIKE De Kock may be making his usual headlines in Dubai but the South African isn't neglecting matters at home, where his representative Mother Russia holds outstanding claims in the Empress Club Stakes at Turffontein, postponed 24 hours until Sunday owing to a waterlogged course.
The four-year-old filly, 2-5 with local layers, won the Grade 2 Ipi Tombe Challenge over this course and distance in December before reverting to Grade 1 to win the 1m1f Paddock Stakes at Kenilworth.
She then ran the best race of her life to go under by only half a length to River Jetez over a furlong further in the J & B Met - and that performance could have been even better than it looked.
Anthony Delpech, who rode her that day, said: "If the two in front of me had kept going a bit longer, I would have won. But they came back into me and I had to pull round them."
Anton Marcus, who rode Mother Russia in both the Ipi Tombe and the Paddock, regains the ride while Delpech partners stable companion Milk And Honey, runner-up 12 months ago.
De Kock has dominated the Empress Club in the last four seasons, winning with Fair Maiden in 2006 and Little Miss Magic 12 months later. He has also sent out the runner-up in each of the last two years.
Mother Russia probably has most to fear from Prestic, an admirably consistent sort rated only 4lb behind the favourite.
Also on Saturday
Mike de Kock also has a strong hand in the three supporting Grade 2 races, including the Gauteng Guineas in which Majorca Stakes dead-heater Gluwein takes on the colts.
Delpech, who again has the mount, said: "It was against the girls last time and now it's against the boys so it's going to be a tougher task. But I think she is still improving and she has to have a chance."

Weather has been good last 24 hrs and look forward to a good days racing and hope to win a few Guineas?
Pick 6 carry over Sidera, Mother Russia bankers, Pierre Jourdan or Galileos Galaxy? add Havasha.
Smart Banker/Rudra/Buy and Sell, will have a look at the combinations
good punting!

First time for me on the 'new' site - my previous 'favorites' link did not work and I thought ABC was no more - anyway just a note regarding Laurel Canyon in the first - jockey's comment after working her on Thursday 'on this work she will be very competitive' - make of that what you will. Heard a whisper for the Spies runner - let's see what happens ....
