I am sure you will find a bookmaker only too willing to lay you the treble as Charles Laird's record in Grade 1 races over ground and outside of Gauteng is not too clever.

JACK MILNER
ORACY proved to be the master on the day as Charles Laird’s runner made it six wins from seven starts in the Grade 3 London News Handicap at Turffontein on Sunday.

Ridden by Piere Strydom, the New Zealand-bred colt got the measure of Captain Scott in the final 200m to win by 1.25 lengths with Dan De Lago running on well for third, just another 0.50 lengths back. Buy And Sell showed he was regaining form by finishing fourth, beaten just 2.25 lengths.

With stable jockey Anton Marcus aboard Dan De Lago, bookmakers had opened him at 8-10 with Oracy on offer at 5-2. But that was soon snapped up and by the time the starter let them go Dan De Lago had drifted to 15-10 with Oracy on offer at 17-10.

Captain Scott was always firm at 4-1 while there was some support for Buy And Sell, who shortened from 8-1 to 13-2.

It was Fenerbahce who set the pace with Oracy on his heels and Captain Scott along the fence in third. Dan De Lago tracked them with Buy And Sell just behind him.

Fenerbahce, Captain Scott and Oracy kicked on while Dan De Lago was left a little flat footed and when Alec Laird’s grey hit the front with 400m to go it looked for a moment as if Captain Scott would hold them at bay. But once Strydom asked Oracy for an effort, he accelerated beautifully to win going away. Dan De Lago finally took off but the line came too soon.

"Oracy was the fitter horse, so the outcome was no surprise,’’ said Laird. "There’s still five weeks to go before the Met and that’s when Dan De Lago will be at his best. Not now!’’

Strydom has been booked to ride Oracy in the J&B Met but still left the door open for Laird. "I would be quite happy to swop if Anton wants to ride Oracy in the Met,’’ said Strydom. Laird, however, confirmed the arrangements will stand.

Marcus was not put off by his mount finishing third to his stablemate. "I thought it was a very good run. I’m quite happy to ride him in the Met.’’

Marcus felt the removal of the blinkers on Oracy had made little difference but Laird explained why they had decided to remove them. "In the Summer Cup, Oracy was very keen early in the straight and took Anton by surprise. If he had been prepared for it he would have been able to hold him.

We didn’t want that to happen here.’’

Strydom had the edge on Marcus for most of the day but in the Lebelo Sprint (Grade 3), Marcus got his revenge. Cyber Case, the 5-2 favourite, looked all over a winner going into the final 100m but Strydom on KwaZulu-Natal visitor Intellectual, suddenly took off and only a hair’s breadth separated them at the line with Cyber Case getting the nod.

"The horse drawn next to me always hangs so he was on me for the first four or five strides and suddenly I was five lengths back,’’ said Strydom. "That probably made the difference.’’

Unfortunately in all the excitement of racing there are a few tragic stories. In Race 2 Trigger suddenly bolted from the parade ring, jumped over the fence into the public area and raced towards the Pavilion. The public scattered to avoid him and the horse unfortunately went crashing into a Pavilion window. He then collapsed and hit his head for a second time.

Stipendiary steward Nicholas Shearer tried to hold the horse to calm him down but unfortunately the damage was done and he died on the scene.

In Race 4 Wie Lil’ Sally was all the rage and backed down to 15-10. But as Piere Strydom hit the front at the 400m, he suddenly eased her out of the race. Sadly, Joey Soma’s filly fractured her off- fore sesamoid and had to be put down.

It proved to be a great day for Strydom, though. He came away with four winners. "Obviously I’m a Christmas jockey,’’ he quipped. "Unfortunately the horse I saw as my best ride broke down. It could so easily have been five.’’
