Margaret,

Don't want to talk for Elvis, but where exactly was is stated that you had to buy your ticket before midnight the day before to qualify for the discount?

It didn't explicity state midnight but was "An Early Bird Special" meaning book before the race day.

Not sure on the exact numbers - they are still being confirmed, but that sounds about right.

Furious R570 per person included gate cover, lunch, dinner and drinks. Elevation had their own special for RA members... Not sure!

Margs what was the strategy around 2 prices for the tickets...If the crowds were flocking to the races I would understand the ''discount'', but when we looking to increase the attendance at the track it just does not make sense?....No payment makes sense in fact.

I have a strong gut feeling that going forward racing especially up here in Jhb is gonna have a difficult ride. The more people in the game you talk to the more one gets the feeling that unhappiness is high..breeders, owners, punters, trainers the lot.

It all boils eventually down to money! Trying to grow racecourse attendance ACTUALLY should be the last thing on the administrators list..although it does attract owners to the game without which there is no game. Its a bit of a vicious circle..they need the stakes up so owners and trainers can survive and pay the ridiculous prices at the sales (in relation to the stakes) and continue to pay unabated increase in Vet bills (which as the medical profession went through 5 yrs ago also be subject to govt intervention). Why should a Vet be allowed to markup whatever he/she feels like for selling a medicine when pharmacies, hospitals and drs only be allowed a maximum of 17% markup?

Its NO USE comparing the training/stakes ratio to countries like UK, France or USA because owning a racehorse there gives owners much esteem on-course.

The question is: Should Summer Cup marketing money be spent on getting people to the course OR increasing tote turnover? Both is not a good answer as the type of marketing tools used would be very different.

50 000 attend July / Met as this rates high on the social calendar of party goers. There is a lot of activity in the hospitality tents. Corporates entertain clients and horseracing is the alternate entertainment on these big days. The point is a small percentage will fall in love with the sport.

5000 at turfies probably already race anyway or are linked to race lovers. No new blood, small conversion rate.

Yes Oscar that is the question - im not sure but if u measure the success of saturday then the answer is no -but maybe they need a chance to turn it around . The strange thing is the powers that be dont show any dissapointment they will probabley hail it as a success. The truth is its more fun at your local at least there we race and enjoy and get on with racing and punting which is what its all about. When turfontein and those in charge learn that then we might come back .Im sure ABC box is a lot of fun but in the meantime ill stay at The Lounge and go to durbs for fun.
