With the current economy the way it is, one can buy a horse cheaper than one can raise it. But the good part about breeding one is that you can control its destiny and avoid pitfalls of buying a horse with a hidden problem. That's the trade off.

Very true,

I won't name the breeder but I was at a prominent stud farm and spotted a foal with terrible legs. Asking about it I got a quick - "Don't worry we'll sort that out with a small operation." I hope the foal does have better legs but as far as I know that "op" won't make it into any catalogue although an experienced eye will pick it up on a yearling at the sales.

Guess it can be likened to buying a second hand car, you never really know where all the scratches and squeaks come from.
