The bookies will always be stuck out if the favourite wins but I would have loved to have known what their book was with BCL. Glen Kotzen and his mates apparantly took every ante-post price they could.

If I had a big punt on PP I would be helluva pissed off, not because he lost but because he didnt get a decent shot at it.

The Bass yard can never be labelled poor sports, I will bet they'll have full coverage on their site tomorrow. I have no doubt they will take it on the chin and be gracious in defeat.

Agree that the Bass' are not bad sports, but even Gold Circle had a report and pic posted just after 6pm last nite

methinks at close to seven PP has reached the peak of his career. it would be interesting to hear BF's view on the ride.

Bass had 4 runners in the race, Surely he could have had a say in the pace.

It was all about the pace of the race.... Thats how they beat the champ. Close him out and slow down the pace. MDK tactics were brilliant. No one ever thought they had a chance but getting to the front and slowing things down does not fair well for a lot of those who need a bit af a fast pace. And yes, it would be nice to hear what the bass yard got say. I also feel that they are not unsportsman like and i am sure in the next few days, we will hear something.

come two weeks, we will see the champ win again! Like Gregbucks said, fastest 400 finish and had he been placed about 5-6 coming round the bend, he would've nailed it. But that is racing. For those who backed BCL, well done!
I personally put R500 on PP to win on the day and covered myself with another R500 on Zirconeum to place. Can never ever discount MDK/Delpech combo.

I've just watched the re-run of the vodacom july and my heart couldn't be any more sore for Pocket Power who never runs out of the placings over this sort of distance.... From that position he could have never had a chance.

Bernard was shacking him up to get a move on but coming round second to last was always a up hill. At the same stage BCL was being held hand and heels.

I backed 2 horses with Mike O Conner
BCL 20000/1000
BCL 16000/1000
and

Forest Path 50,000/700

tactic....well no tactic alone will get Forest Path to run in the 1st 4...ride it flat from the jump....it will be there all the way...

backed Bouquet-garni and banker in the P6 (+R360K) on 25 april turfontein..
no tactic....other than ride it flat...all the way...it will be there...

why cant the other horses do the same.....bad draws...not fit...wrong trainer...wrong tactics.....

The July was run at a farcically slow pace.
The eventual first 4 all travelled in the first 5 throughout.
(Aluminum was the only one who faded)

The end time was a little slower than Killaridge in R3
More significantly at the 600m pole the July was over 3 seconds slower than R3, where they went a decent clip.

PP and Kapil both did well to get as close as they did.

I cannot believe the rubbish some people write.... Pocket stumbled at the start and bounced outwards and by the time bernard steadied the horse, the rest of the field had gone past him!!! He had no choice but to tuck him up at the back!!! Slow pace didn't suit either!!!

The voice of reason. One hundred percent correct. The race was run to suit those who were handy and was a killer for those who race from off the pace. It happens, especially when the good old fashioned O'Brien-style pacemaker is not employed. Pocket Power ran very well in the circumstances, but his goose had been cooked almost from the start. Ditto for Kapil, River Jetez, Cape Town and any other backrunner you can mention.

Frustrating, yes. But nothing that doesn't happen in many other races big and small throughout the year.
