Including members of this forum! Dorrie's horse Lawdy is pictured below at Penbrite. Dorrie recently just lost FOXHOLE (at 26) who competed and enjoyed his retirement at Penbrite


The Penbritte Thoroughbred Series is a unique market leader,
championing the second careers of thoroughbreds. Unlike other
shows which require rigorous registrations, the thoroughbred
series is an integrated show which means that any thoroughbred
may compete. Currently in it’s fourth year, the series has grown
exponentially and now includes both showjumping and dressage
legs and is having profound impacts on the ethical considerations
of retired racehorses. The second leg which took place on the 15th
of July saw 102 thoroughbreds compete over several heights from
60cm up to 1.30m. The youngest thoroughbred that competed
on the day was 4-years-old, while the oldest was 19-years-old.
This showcases the longevity of thoroughbreds in second careers.
Moreover, every thoroughbred is subject to veterinary compliance
and wellness checks.
From horses who never made it out of the Maiden’s to multiple
Group winning horses, the heart-warming stories are endless. A
mare who was unable to get into foal at Stud is now a multiple
Dressage competition winner. A brave gelding who suffered
a tendon injury was rehabilitated and went on to win overall
thoroughbred of the day in the showjumping class. This shows us
that with the correct care and rehabilitation, every retired racehorse
can go on to have a successful, loving second career.
This series has also allowed us to meaningfully engage with
thoroughbred owners, and redress stigma toward racing through
re-education. Taking inspiration from racing, the grooms who take
great care of their horses, are also rewarded and it is lovely to see
that many have now joined the Saturday Turffontein racing crowd!

This thread seems to have been derailed a bit. Apart from all of the terribly depressing points discussed above - How do these treatments that are given to horses that are being scrutinized affect a horses form? As punters, how were we suppose to find a winner on form, when all of a sudden a horse with no previous form in the race can go to the front and keep on relentlessly finding and finding.. and then go on and do it again race after race.
