INQUIRY – JOCKEY SIMANGA (S’MANGA) KHUMALO
The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an inquiry held in Durban on 1 November 2021, Jockey S’manga Khumalo was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read with Guideline M on the use of the crop. The particulars being that he struck the horse NATIVE TONGUE more than 12 times with his crop in Race 7, at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 17 October 2021.
Jockey Khumalo pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of the charge.
The Inquiry Board, after considering the mitigating factors and taking into account Jockey Khumalo’s poor recent record in relation to this Rule, imposed a penalty of a suspension from riding in races for a period of seven days.
Jockey Khumalo has the Right of Appeal against the penalty imposed.

Great news! Jocks need to comply with rules and the STIPES need to enforce the rules with no fear or favour!

Fffff them. One of the few jockeys that punters can rely on and they suspend him. Did similar to Hewitson when he was in top form for the punters.

Ban the whip!
Horses are the only animals who may be beaten in public for entertainment. That is why Animal Aid has campaigned for some 15 years to ban the whip from racing in Britain.
A ban on the whip for any use other than safety is very popular and perfectly practical. A public opinion poll in 2018 found that 68% of respondents oppose the use of the whip in racing. When only including those who expressed a view, this figure rose to 83%. It was banned in Norway in 1982 and British jockeys still ride there.

Figueroa would have won every race...maybe still could at his age if the panelbeaters were actually required to ride properly rather than defaulting to the whip because of other errors they've made in their riding...

So the NHRA must change the rules for certain Jockeys? If he did not breach the rules repeatedly then he would not be sanctioned - Either we do away with rules or we enforce them - For me I'd rather have way way more enforcement than less - I think Devin Habib may well have been the first rider to be suspended for crop misuse and he was a guy that allways tried to win regardless of the mount he was on yet he received a 3 meeting ban and 10k fine - If you transgress the rules you are at an advantage over the other riders who are compliant and thus as a punter who's money is on a compliant rider you are at a disadvantage which can never be just.

Agreed, ban the whip, no matter how polystyrene it is.

Bunnyhuggers all of you.
If there are no welts it equates to little more than the sound to encourage the horse. If you are so set on animal welfare then you should not be involved in racing in any shape or form seeing that animals spend 22/24 hours cooped up in a stable - is that cruel?

for me it's not the cruelty that bothers me(horses cause more damage to themselves in their interaction with other horses and their surrounds than what a crop could ever do) - it's the way some riders actually unbalance a horse when they use the crop- They cause a negative change in momentum which causes the horse to hang and lose ground - Sometimes I wonder if the result would be different for certain riders if they only used the crop over the last 50M - There are certain riders, especially the younger appies who actually stop a horse the moment they start "swinging the cane"... A perfect example is Strydom(Fortune was also a master) who used balance and showing the crop more often that hard cracks.. There is another young rider who often unbalanced and stopped a horse when he tried to switch whip hands - He has only in the last 2 or 3 years mastered this action and he is now riding more winners than ever.
