Angus Campbell has a vision - Triple 8 Racing

Our dream is to embrace the new changes that are sweeping SA horseracing and to contribute to a bold, exciting, and BIG new era for the sport.

We plan to use South Africa as a base for a large-scale international racing business. Instead of SA being a tiny racing event market it can be the foundation for the largest new horseracing brand in the world, creating 1000s of jobs and revenue from across the globe.

Most NB, we believe this new dawn must include a radical shift for race meetings so that they attract thousands of new spectators who grow a love of horseracing.

THE RESEARCH

We researched what other international sporting codes, businesses, and bodies have done before and combined this with our racing event experience to create a horseracing model and business that could compete with the world’s biggest sporting and entertainment brands.

Sports that have successfully transitioned into the modern era, followed a formula. They all created a product that was easy to understand, unbelievably fun, fast paced and had huge exposure across multiple platforms. Sports that have successfully innovated include cricket (T20), rugby (Sevens) and darts (unbelievably!). As a result, these sports have an army of fans spread across the globe.

Ironically, these changes to each sport were often initially met with fierce resistance from their most loyal followers. Die-hard fans, who are the most desperate to see their sport grow, are often the last to accept fundamental changes to how things are done.

THE SOLUTION

Attracting a new market will not be achieved by adding elements to existing race meeting events. The format of the racing itself needs to be changed.

We must create a horseracing product that:

• Is easy to understand

• Takes less time to complete

• Includes mind-blowing entertainment

• Is team based

• Uses the latest data and technological innovations

• Can be broadcast on multiple digital platforms

• Is fan driven

• Is horse focused

• Appeals to sponsors

• Is family friendly

• Aligns with corporate entertainment/hospitality criteria

The answer is Triple 8 Racing. It is designed for rapid growth and large-scale exposure - a sport revolution and massive business innovation. A game changer. It radically changes the sport and is a live experience that appeals to all demographics and translates brilliantly onto multiple broadcast platforms.

TRIPLE 8 RACING

Eight teams of horses and jockeys’ race against each other with each race being a standard sprint of 800m. There are 8 races at each event. Points are allocated for each race and one team is crowned the winner at each event. A series of these racing events is combined to form a Triple 8 Racing series with one team being crowned the series winner. The jockey with the most points is crowned the champion jockey and the fastest horse is crowned the champion horse.

WHY TRIPLE 8 RACING?

Many Triple 8 Racing elements have been used or tested in racing before, but no company or brand has combined them together to create the powerful horseracing experience that is T8 Racing.

T8 Racing is designed to appeal to a mass market and is built to be experienced on the platforms they use. From a business perspective it entices non-racing people and entities to invest in the sport through team ownership, sponsorship, rights ownership, and corporate event hospitality.

T8 Racing appeals to a modern market because it is:

• Easy to understand

• A short format sporting experience (fast + furious!)

• Team based and uses a standardised sprint distance

• Built around the latest technological innovations

• Fan driven

• Horse focused and always puts horse welfare first (e.g. whip free riding)

• Data and stats focused allowing for deep fan engagement

What about robots substituting jockeys. You laugh? They’ve already trialled it with camel racing in the Middle East.

Mac this is only a new idea in SA, they tried it i the UK and the idea either never got the backing or the BHA thought it was against the rules of racing..

Also not sure how the owners in SA would agree, they hated the idea when Gold Circle done their T20 Racing..

Also i read a piece on SM where Triple 8 said they wanted to distance themselves from betting... Good luck with getting the stakes then!

Also, wasn’t someone planning meetings where there were going to race through some English towns?

From the BBC

Epsom, home of the Derby, is one of eight courses that will host 'The Series'

A planned Formula 1-style summer horse racing series involving teams has been delayed until 2020.

Eight racecourses in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland had agreed to stage meetings with millions of pounds in prize money.

But a spokesman for Championship Horse Racing told BBC Sport: "We can confirm we have delayed the launch until next year."

In December, organisers said 'The Series' would take place this summer.

The plan was for it to take place on consecutive Thursday evenings.

Eight racecourses commit to hosting new team competition

"We are currently getting the teams in place for 2020 and over the summer we will make a more detailed announcement about our exciting future plans," added the spokesperson on Wednesday.

Ayr, Epsom, Goodwood, Haydock, Leopardstown, Newbury, Newmarket and Sandown had all agreed to stage meetings with six Flat races.

Each of the 48 races, from 25 July to 12 September, would have been worth at least £100,000.

The series is being organised by Championship Horse Racing and its chief executive, Jeremy Wray - a former chairman of Swindon Town FC.

Each team would comprise a racing manager, four jockeys and a squad of 30 horses.

However, the meetings were additional to the British fixture list, required the approval of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), and attracted some controversy.

The plan was criticised by leading owner and sponsor Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, who described it as a "ridiculous idea".

Sheikh Fahad, whose interests include Qatar Racing, had urged the BHA to consult with trainers and owners before proceeding.

He also heads Qipco, sponsors of the British Champions Series, which has several big races over the summer.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was announced Qatar's sponsorship of the Glorious Goodwood Festival would be extended for another five years.

The five-day meeting, which this year starts on 30 July, has been supported by another Qatari sheikh - Joaan Al Thani, founder of Al Shaqab Racing.

Not sure where you read that Triple 8 Racing wanted to be distanced from racing. The opposite is true - we want to use T8 Racing to keep betting revenue with racing. Other sports are no longer reluctant to associate themselves with betting (see all the betting sponsors in the English Premier League). Like all sport businesses racing needs to adapt and innovate to remain relevant, especially if it wants to attract a younger market.

You could be referring to City Racing. Their goal is to race through the world's most iconic cities bringing racing to the masses. They use a specially made artificial track which is installed in 48 hours. Around the world racing businesses are looking at targeting a new market. Our view is that racing in SA is well positioned to try something new because the costs are relatively low. We also believe the timing is right to push for something bold and big now.

That is City Racing. They are still pressing ahead and wanted to run their first race this year but the funding they require is pretty large. They are now aiming for a 2021 race it seems.

Originally called the Champions League and now called the Racing League they have stated that their goal is to attract a newer younger market to racing. Change is coming one way or the other as it has to sports around the world. Our aim for Triple 8 Racing is to achieve the same for SA - the building of a massive new fan base for racing who love the sport (not just the fashion and the parties).

Sorry, maybe i misunderstood and the word "distanced" is too strong when you said in one of the earlier articles on linkedin that the "Focus was away from betting"
