I thought this thread was about GAVIN LERENA who rides again Thursday - I thought that I would have to wait until WINTER to WATCH him ride a winner again!

Can a form student help, looking at Mustaaqeem’s two juvenile wins the form doesn’t look to great. Is this usual with 2yo’s? And we are better using the eye than form?

There are various possibilities as to why Mustaaqeem 'disappointed' yesterday - keep in mind that a disappointing run is not necessarily a poor one:
1. He just needed the run after 40 weeks off
2. He might not be quite as good as he was when he won his Grade 1 last year - the layoff suggests he's had issues of some sort in the meantime
3. The form of his Grade 1 win isn't as strong as it first appeared, even though he was visually impressive. It's worth bearing in mind that the fourth and fifth horses in that race are struggling in handicaps these days.
All will no doubt be revealed when the horse has had a couple more runs, but, for what it's worth, I don't think yesterday's run was too bad. Given the hype surrounding the horse, even if he had won yesterday's race by 3/4 of a length instead of being beaten into fourth by that distance, many would have still been disappointed.
One last point: backing horses at 2/7 when they're coming off a long layoff will pay for many a bookmaker's summer holidays.
