Here's an exercise, mute the audio when Sheldon is calling, if your fancy doesn't win, see if you dislike the man more.
That's the beauty of watching any sport, you don't need the audio, you know when your horse, team, boxer, is in shit, despite what the commentator is trying to communicate - it works, try it.
Alistair by a country mile....
Lionel, all commentators have their good and bad moments. Irrespective of who is calling the race, local or overseas, if your fancy wins the race, do you really care what phraseology is used? Try and watch a football match with a muted audio and play your favourite cd at the same time. You really don't need to hear what the commentator thinks, you can see what is going on for yourself. Should your team lose, who's to blame?, the muted commentator or your favourite cd? That's my point, it doesn't matter, audio on or off.
Obviously the most important aspect of horse race betting is backing the winner Bayern. But that's not the point here. A good commentator also adds to the experience, just like a good football commentator does. Personally, I hate watching soccer without the commentary...it's just not the same. And I just love it when Martin Tyler commentates....pure objectivity. That's all we are asking for. Sheldon is not bad....but he needs to separate his work from his personal life (punting). I did not have a bet on that race, but I found his commentary very irritating. The way he was calling it, I was expecting to see Viking Red bursting through and winning at a canter...honestly.

Lionel, I'm not having a go at you, please understand that. All the "arguments", your's included, are from an emotional perspective. If the commentary was in a foreign language which you didn't understand at all, and the horse/team/boxer lost, one's prejudices would be the same. The commentator cannot influence the outcome of the event.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

When you back a horse and it wins, I don't think it matters who says what?

Bayern, relax. I'm a big boy. I don't get ruffled easily.
I know what you're saying, that they cannot influence the outcome, and you're correct. But they do add to or remove from the viewing experience...without a doubt. They're getting paid to do a job. They must do it properly. I'm not having a go at Sheldon for the sake of it....I really feel he let himself down tonight with that call.

Re: Sheldon Peters
7 years 8 months ago - 7 years 8 months agoreally from this post it shows you clearly havent heard the great callers of the past like graeme hawkins peter and ernie duffield trevor and eric denman ..sheldon and a few of commentator mates need to realise that horseracing is not all about gambling it has an audience that includes the owners breeders and trainers of the other horses in the race and most importantly the other punters who are in the majority who lose hard earned money on that race ...he is totally insensitive to these other people with a lot of these comments he makes and he needs to stop ..the race caller is a major part of the adrenalin rush that people get out of racing and those greats i mention cut their cloth when we didnt have televised pictures but had only radio and they painted the picture ..we still have many who cant afford tv and might call for a commentary and hopefully we will have a racing radio station...Another issue i have is the new breed of callers are all of a sudden giving these post race summaries whereby they pedigree experts form experts after race experts instead of just calling the fcuking race from a non biased point and view and then going through the summary of where the horses finished ..ALSO WE HAVE SOME CALLERS PRAISING OTHERS IF THEY TIPPED THE WINNER ..the best and most proffesional caller is jehan malherbe as he calls the race and he sums up perfectly afterwards what happened and if anyone who is an expert in many fields in racing its him but he knows what the listeners want ...racecallers play a massive part in the game and whoever is in charge of them needs to give them a few wake up calls...and by the way i know sheldon and like him as a personbayern wrote: Guys, if you don't like his commentary, just mute the audio. remember bayern not everybody just has straight bets they also take exotics whereby they have more than one horse running for them so what do you want them to do learn all the colours of the horses to see if their quartet arrived ?what about those who punt on horses who have problems with their eyesight?

Commentating is a job. They should remain neutral and call the field home...
