Fact of the matter is training + incidentals + vat = About R5500 /month in my experience from Past 2 years. This is from trainers on the top half of the log in the region. Roughly R60,000 p.a. + 20% of income.

I would say the average horse does not pay it's way, and 0% of capital purchase recovered.
So if you a ordinary folk, choose hobby-sport carefully, either a racehorse and appalling treatment from start to finish - or a holiday home (say 100k dep and 5k/month should get u the basics)
