After Legal Eagle's very impressive win yesterday, I think he should be outright favorite.
On my ratings (using Judicial and Killua Castle as line horses), LE ran to 120+ - which would mean that he will come into the July carrying at least 4 kg's less than he would have in a normal handicap; now I think Futura is a super horse, but even he is going to struggle to give 6 kg's away to Legal Eagle - so well done to the guys who took the huge odds available on him before the Derby - at least I got some of the 14/1

Agreed on Legal Eagle (I had him rated 117+ before yesterday anyway)
I will still include Majmu in my exotics (and a small saver) ..............and Wylie Hall of the older Brigade!

Even using Heavy Metal and Rushmore River gives a rating of about 120+...is Legal Eagle really that good ?? Would make Legal Eagle the best horse in training in SA...and having only had 6 runs, more improvement to come...

Out of interest ,does anyone know what is the least number of runs had by a horse prior to running and winning the July?
Would the Eagle be making history by winning at only his 7th outing?

My memory is not what it used to be but Millard brought a horse to Durban for the season(I think it was Illustrador) which was either a maiden or 1 time winner .......won a couple of races(features) ,including the guineas and another feature(maybe the Daily News) and then the July............I think it must have been close!!

No, Fools Holme I fancied strongly and backed ..........but that got beat by stable companion,Occult!!
Can't remember how many runs it had but I am pretty sure Illustrador had very few!

greys inn didn't have more than 6 or 7 runs before winning the rothmans..sealegs you wont have to search to far back because the old mindset which sadly still exists today is that 6 time winners are better than 2 time winners so they got into the july first ...

Thanks................I eventually did find his career ..........He had his first run when just turning 3 and finished unplaced, carrying 56 Kg(took 3 runs to win a maiden) and 9 months later he won the SA guineas carrying 57Kg ,and then the July another 2 months later.
(As Pirates said Greys Inn was also lightly raced ...........won the July in his 8th start!)
