Jack Milner: Across The Ice and Uncle Tommy have clashed a few times on the Vaal sand and with one exception, Sean Tarry’s charge has had the edge up to 1200m while over further, it is the Weiho Marwing-trained runner who holds the upper hand.
July 14, 2014 They will meet again in Race 7 on Tuesday in a Pinnacle Stakes, and as it will be run over 1200m, one should side with Across The Ice. It is one of those strange phenomena where Uncle Tommy is rated 7.5kg better off on handicap but the form does not match the rating – at least not over 1200m.
The last time they met over the course and distance it resulted in a two-length win for the seven-year-old son of Western Winter, who was ridden by Piere Strydom. Although they were carded to meet at level weights, Uncle Tommy had apprentice Wesley Marwing in the irons and he claimed 2.5kg.
This time they are again carded to meet at level weights but while Strydom is back aboard Across The Ice, S’manga Khumalo is down to ride Uncle Tommy so on this occasion Tarry’s charge is 2.5kg better off.
Across The Ice, a full brother to Capetown Noir, has a remarkable record over 1200m on the Vaal sand – six wins and two places from 10 runs. Uncle Tommy has been the model of consistency over the trip with two seconds from two runs.
Strydom has ridden this gelding on 18 occasions and has recorded seven victories and eight places. He also has another slight advantage on this occasion as Across The Ice is drawn No 4 while Uncle Tommy jumps from barrier No 8.
The hard part for punters is trying to work out who will run third and fourth. If one looks at the ratings those positions should go to Nice Stride and Sabadell but both have issues. Nice Stride is not at his best over 1200m while Sabadell will be making his sand debut and has not raced for almost a year.
Sabadell might be out for a run but trainer Geoff Woodruff does have another entrant who could completely upset the apple cart – Shadow Ofhis Smile. The three-year-old has not raced on the surface and has been out of action since 6 May but he does have a good record over 1200m with two wins and a 0.30-lengths third behind Snowdon in three races over the distance.
He is not too badly weighted on handicap, is well drawn at No 3 and will be ridden by Raymond Danielson.
Like Across The Ice, Shadow Ofhis Smile is by Western Winter and in general his progeny have performed well on the sand.

Lady of Kildare X Across the Ice
Lady of Kildare received a 4 kg allowance over the 1600m on the sand last start out (On the sand not turf), good draw today and services of Pierre she should go close again albeit the slight distance concerns - perhaps she prefers a little further
Across the Ice - Well not much in it to be honest, Uncle Tommy has done nothing wrong, he's clearly well weighted to win with ease BUT he usually only gets going at the 1100m, IF Across the Ice gets a clean break and races up front he will be impossible to peg back over this trip. Bling won with UT on the 06th December 2012 which was he's one and only win on UT and it was over the 1450m, Pierre has won on Across the Ice 6 times during the same period and surely must be respected (Across the Ice at 7/2 is my best bet for today and a banker in all my exotics)

Please explain you reasoning for High Horse Lady being a confident selection? Based on what, De Kock's horses don't have a good history of winning when taken from turf to the sand first time out and secondly she ran 2nd against a very poor field last start out (Highest MR Horse was Empire of the Moon @ MR68) - NAP IMO
Filly Bushwacker - I must agree a decent place chance but still risky. Pick 6 will include no less than 9 runners for me in what looks a very difficult race

R8 there have been claims/nibbles on FillyB,ShoutOut and OlympicS.Yet 1,2,4,6,7,11 must also come into the reckoning
