Was tongue in cheek Hibs. No contest in my opinion. Trainer by a mile. If a horse is unfit, unwell, sore, placed in the wrong race the best jockey in the world cannot make it win. On the other hand a mediocre jock can win on a superbly tuned horse.

By saying it's a good horse, then you are saying it's the Trainer, as he is surely the one choosing the horses ?

I believe its a little bit of both.As a trainer can have a horse spot on for the day...but than gets the wrong jock up...who rides the horse 'differently' that day...So for me its also a case of is it the right race for the horse...the right track? Many horses have form to win their 'next starts' but than run in 'wrong' races...or wrong jocks up...so the balance should be just right.

What do you mean by only trainer and 1/2 jockey?

a good trainer can place a bad horse in the correct race for it to earn - Often I have seen trainers with limited stock(maybe pressure put on them by owners) race a fair horse in company too advanced for it - the horse contests all the 2/3 year old features it can and runs down the drain - It battles to win in non-feature company and takes a while to hit winning ways again as its become accustomed to losing . Another thing that certain trainers do is try to get a horse that is racing well over sprints to go ground(so that it can contest Classics) and it flops dismally and can often battle to regain form - It is for these reason and more that I say the trainer is the most important cog in the chain - You can give a man a Mercedes Benz but if he cannot adjust his driving from that of a VW Beetle then that Merc is wasted on him.

By most of the posts I see on this forum, the most important in the outcome of the race is pace of the race
