problem is that handicaps are based on ratings that do not reflect a horse's ability. a horse flukes a good run then its rating goes up but then for the next ten runs its runs like a donkey. by the time the rating is corrected everyone has written off the horse and then the donkey wins at double digit odds.
basically most handicaps are just a gamble. and then you get a horse coming from a long layoff (6months plus) winning like it ran last week. on a lot of these punters are just in the dark, our expect tipsters aren't helping either. there are also trainers who deliberately mislead the public by sending the public the wrong direction to get a price for the connections.

Harris protests too much, sounds like you have a problem with the man, unless of cause, you can explain the horses performance.

Is it right to air your dirty washing on TV.....for me it sucks!...have a go at your trainer if you feel you need to but to lower yourself on tv.....suppose each to their own.

You have to feel for the trainer ... Van Eck hardly has any horses in his stable so he has a hard task judging work unless he is timing, weighing, monitoring heart rate etc He's old school so I suppose everything is done by the eye.

I'm sure all willbe sorted between the 2. Nahoon beach was punted and drifted out from 25/1 to 33/1, so imo nothing untoward about the win by the trainer.

Greg , I don't remember horses being suspended but often there were enquiries and fines for sudden improved running!
Remember , under the old "race figure " system poor runs did not improve a horses chance of winning later races and it may be coincidence but patterns of inconsistency were not as prevalent.
The introduction of the MR system should have alerted the need for careful regulation to avoid manipulation!
I was at a function with a top gauteng trainer during the period when the change to MR was happening and I will quote him" if they let me handicap my own horses , I would be stupid not to take advantage of that."

This Owner was actually very vague and it was difficult to really know what was his real problem for being P off ,was he against the handicappers ,his trainer or the tipsters

I don't think he was vague at all - It seems he was told by the trainer that the horse had no chance - He picked the horse and believed it had ability but he was not given any confidence to punt this horse - I would ask Mr Mac what do you expect from a trainer that has maybe 6-8 horses in training? Do you expect him to give you confidence for a horse that is not well bred, has only had 10 starts as a four-year-old, wins by a snort etc - I doubt very much if Mr Van Eck mislead him as the horse won on the inside and that stable has pulled off major coups years ago with strong support. Mr Mac is a nice man but seriously Johan would have welcomed a serious punt and the opportunity to get a few more horses in his yard.

Saw the interview and thought "what a dick". Moron works just fine too.
Some people have 30 years experience in racing, and others merely repeated the first year 30 times.
