Final field Classic

SUBJECT: Final fields for SA Classic and Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic
DATE: Wednesday 19 March 2014
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
Louis The King, winner of the Gauteng Guineas, will attempt to clinch the
second leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown on Saturday 29 March when he lines up
for the R2-million SA Classic over 1800m at Turffontein.
The Geoff Woodruff-trained runner will once again be ridden by Robbie Fradd
and will be helped by an excellent No 4 draw for this Grade 1 event. The
Triple Crown carries a bonus of R2-million for any runner who can win the
Guineas, Classic and SA Derby and if Louis The King can do that, he will
etch his name in the annals of South African racing history.
At the same time Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Arcetri Pink will attempt
to win the second leg of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara when she runs in
the R1-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic on the same day.
There are stamina doubts about this daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar but then
many pundits felt she would not stay 1600m in the Guineas. She will also
have the services of Fradd and jumps from barrier No 1.
There are 14 runners in the SA Classic field and trainers Alec Laird and
Sean Tarry will each saddle five runners. Forest Indigo, As You Like and
Bouclette Top – all from the Laird stable – finished second, third and
fourth respectively in the Guineas and along with Mr Cricket, who started
favourite for that event, will attempt to dethrone Louis The King. Laird’s
fifth entry is Bezanova.
Mercado performed best of the Tarry runners in the Guineas, finishing
fifth, and he is joined by Lance, Silva Hawk, Fort Bellini and Supertube.
Mike de Kock sends out Taarish and Umgiyo, with the latter being ridden by
current stable jockey Anthony Delpech while former stable jockey Weichong
Marwing is aboard Taarish.
Woodruff has two other runners in the Fillies Classic – Not Sulking, who
ran second in the Guineas, and impressive Zephira, who will be ridden by
Piere Strydom.
Athina, who ran third in the Guineas, will jump from draw No 9 and will be
ridden by Kevin Shea.
The balance of the card will be finalised on Tuesday.

They may have found the right distance for Arcetri Pink, 1600+, after all the horse is bred to go ground. Her last victory was very meritorious considering the state of the going, and the doubt about her staying the trip, let alone winning. From gate 1, I wouldn't be surprised to see her beating them again.

Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

Think you are right about her being suited to the trip - but I think she will have her work cut out - imo horses like Winter Star and Along Came Polly (was said to not be 100% for the Guineas) would appreciate good ground, while the improvers like Santa Carolina and Zephira could also feature

I'm not sure that any of those behind Louis the King could turn the tables - yes he might have been mores suited to the going than some of those, but the way he won I think he will be hard to beat - the interesting runner for me is Bezanova - no chance on official MR, but I just think he has been looking for this trip and could well end up in the first 3

I am going to give Mr Cricket and Santa Carolina one more chance as I believe that something was seriously amiss last time out (
