I think there's some committee you can apply to to have names protected. There's a list of them as I remember and it is on the Internet. I'll see if I can find it. But very recent names won't be on it.

If anyone wants to check up what horse's names are protected, they can see the lists at:

www.horseracingintfed.com/racingDisplay.asp?section=17

Basically, three types of name are protected:
1. Stud horses and mares
2. Winners of some big races (no SA ones included here)
3. Any name requested by a Horseracing Authority that is a member of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.

Black Caviar is not on the lists from 2010, 2011 or 2012. I didn't look further back as I doubt she would appear so early.

Sure, the NHRA has its own rules, but the names are only within its own stud book so nothing stopping one naming from a foreign jurisdiction. I'm under correction for the below mentioned time periods.

1. Can't name after another horse within 3 years
2. Can't name after another mare within 7 years
3. Can't name after a stallion within 20 years
4. Can't name after a special list for ever eg Sea Cottage

Personally i think its a disgrace that they allowed it. Black Caviar and Frankel have put racing back in the headlines for the right reason so why dishonour what they have done by allowing the name to be used.
I know in Aus that they have changed horses names even after they have raced after there have been complaints so maybe the powers that be should do that here?

Anyway good luck to the COLT Black Caviar on wed

In fairness to them BC was only a 4 time winner when this colt was born and had not made any headlines.

From Herald Sun OZ

BLACK Caviar is set to contest a 1000m race at Durbanville in South Africa tomorrow night - sparking international outrage.

Australian racing authorities are up in arms that an unraced South Africa two-year-old colt has been named after the world's most famous racehorse.

There is a tacit agreement among racing jurisdictions around the world to protect the names of elite racehorses.

For example, you won't see Phar Lap's name used in England while Australian owners will not be able to register Frankel. So how Black Caviar's name was allowed to be registered in South Africa is perplexing.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys said he would take the necessary steps to ensure the identity of Australia's greatest sprinter is protected.

"There is an understanding among racing jurisdictions not to allow the name of a great racehorse to be used again, either in the country of the horse's origin or anywhere else in the world," V'landys said last night.

"I'll certainly be contacting my South African counterparts (today) to rectify this anomaly immediately.

"This should not have been allowed to happen."

The South African Black Caviar is a two-year-old bay colt by Black Minnaloushe, and the Maiden Juvenile Plate he's contesting is being covered by Sky Channel and the NSW TAB.

Meanwhile, the "real" Black Caviar has continued to do well since her track record-breaking comeback win in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington last month.

Trainer Peter Moody said Black Caviar is set to race next in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley before she returns to Sydney for the TJ Smith Stakes.
