When the Vaal sand was first installed it held perfectly and we had several meetings when had heavy rains. For me it looks like over the years without the proper treating and maintenance of the surface it deteriorated. If we put a new "all weather" or synthetic surface whoever the track manager is should be sent on extrensive training to be able to maintain the surface property, maybe spend some time in the States or other countries where they successfully maintain the surfaces. I am not having a go at the track management of the Vaal because they probably did not know any better. In the States the horses on the "dirt" run with specific sand shoes, why do we not allow this here?
I agree this forum is not the avenue to slate people or accuse them of owing monies.

Please don't take it personnally when someone disagrees with you - as for the tapeta, wasn't there an outcry in Dubai about this surface this year? And I'm not saying sand is better, it just gives another alternative - so please forgive me as well

The tapeta in Dubai is, by all accounts, a disaster. The track is WAYYYY too light and horses are running way to quickly over the surface. They pulling more muscles and doing more tendons than any other surface. That being said it doesn't mean that Tapeta is not the way to go, just not the way to go in a desert climate perhaps?
The Vaal sand isn't that bad and it's not meant to be the best in the business, just give us an alternative, like Frodo said.
Remember, horses that act on grass will more than likely act on synthetic. Horses who act on sand almost never run well on synthetic.
There is a place for all 3 surfaces around good ol SA methinks.

I totally agree. Should have a variety to suit all types of horses. It will keep lots more interest in the game.
